Description

A collection of poems offers more powerful messages that paint a vivid picture of life, its lessons, and its gifts.

The answer elusive like sparks from the fire,
The question of what goals to aspire.
What lies in the depths of your heart
Is what sets the great men apart—
The noble quest to raise the bar,
To guide humankind to a brighter star.

Ian Stott leans on rhymes and his heart to speak to people from all walks of life while reminding us that there is inspiration to be found within the peace of daily observation and creative expression.

In a second volume of poetry that includes photographs, Stott shares verse that evolves from the emotional release of his debut poetry collection, Souvenirs of the Soul. Within diverse poems, Stott lyrically explores the game of life, the magic of giving, broken glass on a beach, the depths of despair, the angel of deception, skating on ice blocks, breadcrumbs and beaches, and kindred spirits.

Connections: Cosmic and Otherwise, Volume II is a collection of poems that offers more powerful messages that paint a vivid picture of life, its lessons, and its gifts.

Tell Me a Story
“Tell me a story,” the little girl pleaded,
So off on an adventure we quickly proceeded
To a jungle where wild animals abound
And spectacular scenery is certainly found.
Around every path, what is revealed?
Equally important, what is concealed?

Those you meet on life’s path as you’ve grown,
Beware of what they choose to be shown.
On the surface, all may appear to be fine,
But only under pressure does real courage shine.
Trust your gut instinct of what lies beneath.
Be on the lookout for ratbag or thief
Who lend an umbrella when the weather is great,
Then grab it back till the rainstorms abate.

So how long is a piece of string,
And what will tomorrow bring?
So many questions with answers unclear!
Hazards abound around which to steer.
Embrace the moment, for that’s all that exists.
Give generously, for love is all that persists.
Game of Life
The pieces are set, but it’s not your turn;
Need to sit back and see what you learn.
Strategy is in place; let’s see how it goes
If the challenger disrupts the planned flows.

Not holding all the cards in hand,
Total control is beyond your command.
Sure, the odds may be in one’s favour,
But an upset result lends a different flavour.

Hit a great forehand! Looks like a winner—
But it returns even faster, the opponent the grinner.
All you can do is play the best shot
And congratulate the one who was simply too hot.
The Magic of Giving
Another night, so lonely and cold:
What bitter feelings do you hold?

Too much pain and so much sorrow:
Against which asset shall you borrow?
For love not given cannot be received—
A cosmic law that is never deceived.

So be not defined by the clothes you wear
But rather by the love you share.
Brighten another, put a smile on their face;
In response, heart and soul enjoy warm embrace.

Listen gently, leave judgement at the door,
For everyone has a major flaw
As part of being human, I suppose,
Which we would prefer not to expose.

Hold tightly till the last breath is spent.
Seek an island of calm in the sea of torment.
When the teacher puts out a helping hand,
The student must make the choice to stand.

Then small steps taken will become a run,
And life will at last be so much fun!

The Mystery Cruise
On a mystery cruise somewhat unplanned,
Changing course as conditions demand,
Not sure how the journey started,
From the safety of home we departed.

We’re on an adventure; adrenaline is flowing.
The heart is pumping, and the face is glowing.
Where we are going nobody knows.
With every moment, the excitement grows.

Life itself is a similar ride
With loved ones by your side.
Never quite sure where a day will lead.
Will you smile, or will you bleed?

Decisions you make will affect the trip;
You hurtle along at a frantic clip
For time seems to evaporate,
Leaving you at the end to contemplate.

Did the journey hit the mark
Or leave you cold out in the dark?
In any case, you had your chance.
Up to you to enjoy life’s dance!
Loving Concern
I sit in the sauna, thankful for the heat,
Reflecting on the journey and the people I did meet;
Now off for a walk to really clear the mind.
Who knows what secret treasures I may find?
For springtime approaches; the change is in the air.
A gentle breeze playfully ruffles through my hair.

The energy stored through winter about to be released
In an explosion of new growth on which to feast;
More smiles upon the faces of the people walking by,
Their footsteps lighter, with a sparkle in the eye.

Footy finals, anticipation mixed with nervous energy abounds;
Can hardly wait for when the siren sounds.
All care but no responsibility for how the game plays out;
Don’t have control, no matter how loudly we shout.

And so it is in human relationships too,
When often it’s unclear what action to do.
You want to show a depth of love,
Though tormented by the push and shove.
Simply show loving concern, and just do your best—
And let the other party take their part of the test.
The Wrong Bus
Was this destination somewhat expected?
Perhaps not, for you seem so dejected.
The food is foreign and tastes foul;
Confined to bed, you’ve thrown in the towel.

You caught the wrong bus when leaving home,
A constant search for meaning to comb.
Perhaps a turn-off the driver failed to take?
This life on Earth feels alien and fake.

Or sent on a mission that was planned
With an attack force under your command,
Chosen to lead with courage and desire
And ability to cope with the red-hot fire,

You await further instructions from home base,
Prepare for the challenges you’re about to face.
Having been frustrated by humankind’s insane way,
You sight the end now for the war’s final play.
