Description

Footprints of the Heart is an anthology of poetry written by University of Johannesburg students and compiled by Quaz Roodt as part of the University's poetry programme. The title of the anthology is taken from the poem 'Footprints of the heart' by Mpoba 'Knowledge' Monyeke. The poetry in this collection offers readers a glimpse into the minds of young people entering adulthood. It shows them dealing with life loss and love. This is also the first time that some of the contributors have had their work published and we hope it serves as a catalyst for future writing and publishing endeavours.

INTRODUCTION
Poetry îs probably one of the last thîngs that crossed Malcolm Forbes’ mînd when he saîd, ‘Puttîng pen to paper lîghts more ire than matches ever wîll’. As the publîsher of Forbes magazîne, ît was more lîkely that he was referrîng to the power of hîs magazîne to înuence the busîness world than drawîng parallels wîth the ire îgnîted wîthîn us when we are gîven a means to gîve shape to a range of complex feelîngs, thoughts and opînîons through poetry.
At the Unîversîty of Johannesburg (UJ), where poetry îs part of the student culture, we are îndeed lîghtîng ires wîth our words. In a tîme when tensîons în the polîtîcal, economîc and socîal arenas run hîgh, outlets such as these offer great value. Every year, hundreds of students attend the Izîmbongî Poetry Festîval to see the world through the eyes of the crîtîcs, vîsîonarîes, and the deep thînkers of theîr tîme. The festîval îs a culmînatîon of weekly poetry workshops and monthly slams – a rîgorous process – to inalîze the ‘best of the best’ festîval lîne-up and so meet the standard of the professîonal spoken word artîsts who are also featured on the programme.
UJ Arts & Culture îs tremendously proud to publîsh thîs collectîon of poetry wrîtten and performed by students at the Izîmbongî Poetry Festîval over the past ive years. The collectîon beautîfully brîngs together an array of pîeces dealîng wîth a wîde range of themes încludîng loss – lamentîng a relatîonshîp that ended, an absent parent or the voîd left by death. I commend the student-contrîbutors, the UJ Arts & Culture champîon of thîs project – Mzwandîle Maphumulo – and Quaz Roodt, who expertly coached the students and curated the anthology.
