FOREWORD
Deep within the heart lies a cavern that cannot be reached by solitary words, emotion, or sincerity. It is no simple task to discover our innermost self and perceive the song reverberating in the artery of our collective heartbeat. It is a lifelong journey and one where we seek wisdom to guide us. Poetry is the sage that paves our path, and poets are those who reveal it.
Sebastian Song is a poet who does more than follow life’s path. He lives and breathes it, so much so that his poetry serves as a bridge to lift us over still waters and into the tides of change.
To read his work is an invitation to join him in appreciating the universe for its stars, its roses, and even its darkness. Le Petit Prince opened his insights as a young man, and contemplating ‘le grand monde’ is shaping him as a poet who sees the stars shine on more than one shore.
Though I initially greeted Song on his path as his teacher, coming to his writing is like coming to know the works of Virginia Woolf—it awes then inspires, then becomes a source of action to do and be more. Song’s immense candor, wonder, and sincerity about exploring the universe transcend the words on the page.
The language that informs Song’s style is as powerful as it is complex and weaves a strong bond with the past by using a modern voice.
This volume begins from his earliest perspective as a youth. Each early poem’s cadence and vocabulary rises with the grace of nature and understanding of its greatest beauty: love, renewal, and an awed connection to ancient ancestors. But as the seasons of his life changed, and his own experiences began belonging to the past, so too did he evolve. Summer never lasts; winter must come. Bittersweet moments are revered and understood with equal acceptance and careful language understanding as joyous ones. But in tremendous skill and sagacity, Song allows the reader to put themselves in his place, rooting us as the flower and benefiting from not only the bloom, but also peace with withering. Such is the path and guide of wisdom.
Song’s candor, wonder, and awareness blurs the line between writer and reader, making his poems a template for us to experience the world through fresh eyes and to make our own interpretations. His writing encourages us to go deep into the nuance of experience and join him in profound sensitivity to the languages of mankind and of nature, audible and unspoken. As Song grows from youth to poet, we grow from mere reader to full heart.
Finding where our spirit and senses connect is the accomplishment of an artist, and Sebastian Song’s connection to his heart has, by virtue, made him a guide and a poet who connects us readers to the truth beating within us.
As readers, Song calls us to action. He has created a beginning point for reflection, interaction, and a deep appreciation between reader, soul, and the world surrounding us. Will we embrace this journey—and the universe—with him?
The poetry of Sebastian Song is borne through experience and tempered by the beauty of painstaking choice of language, a commitment to authenticity, and a vision that perpetually reaches beneath the surface.
Purple Heart is a revelation in exploring where the universe, nature, and the deepest thoughts and perceptions of mankind collide. Through this work, Song guides us to our inner melody and, if we listen, amplifies our heartbeat.

SEASON 1 I’M IN
A FAINT SONG FROM THE FARAWAY
From the faraway,
The sun’s forehead shimmers;
To earth it sprays
A daffodil-like colour.
While I roam, I see the first light
Blossoms from clouds low,
And projects on the sky
Their wandering shadows.
In a trance, I hear a faint song from the furthermost.
Afar,
The windmill gently swings its ochre arms,
Pleasant smells of ripening rice in air.
Alone,
I drift among concrete walls, one upon one,
While golden waves of wheat, at distance, shine.
Farewell,
Forth fly the breeze across the door, jingling the bronze bells;
Forth fly may I to where the singing dwells;
Bells and I are going to a distant place,
To listen to the faint song from the faraway.

WHEN A DRIZZLE IS COMING DOWN
When a drizzle is coming down,
I watch it as it slowly drips,
Walking beneath grey tiles of the eaves,
Vermilion flowers blooming quietly on the lawn.
Where I trod,
Clusters of glazed whiteness broke.
A shimmering night, a serene moonbeam,
I sent to you, Magnolia of boulevards,
When the whole sky’s lit up with sparkling stars,
May evening breeze veil your hazy dreams.
Hushed and lain,
Be drunk with the rain.
Be drunk in the gloom,
Until bunches of lotuses bloom.
See the clusters of glazed rain.
How white the flowers and grass are washed by it.
Remained in grey tiles, wisps of mist
Whispers a ripple in soft wind.
When the drizzle is about to leave,
I watch it as it paces away.
Standing together in quiet and peace,
With you, Magnolia, I wait
For blossoms at treetop, and the rainbow after clouds.

DROPS OF TIME
Shined to bright, drops of time
Fell upon the curtain of night.
Hence, moon began to shimmer
And stars came to birth.
Like tears which welled up
In the midsummer’s memory,
The stars reduced to dust,
went out with no more glory.
I held them all with my palms
And sent them back to the past.

AT EASE
Do not hide from the Northern wind,
For it’s sung by the chilly winter.
Do not escape from the moonlight,
For it sheds the grief of night.
Play the lonely pipe,
but please don’t go away.
Do not leave but memory
On which easily spill your life.
February 2020, Qingfeng Xuan
SILENCE
My heart
At the fracture of harp
Shattered
Snowy
Ashes
Times never pass by
In between the dusts
And white rose no longer shy
February 2020, Qingfeng Xuan
WARMING YEARS
Please don’t fill your letter with words.
Don’t send it far away.
Be the first man to wake up in the sea
and peek at the blue skyscape.
I stand at the peak of eternity.
The bright bamboo flowers are with me.
Let me admire
