Shock’s buffer
Immobility grips so tight
Squeezes all your breath out
The promise of forever suddenly broken
Your faculties give in
Weighted legs buckle
Your entire future is in doubt
This can’t be happening
You repeatedly recite
Thoughts are spinning
Begging for repose
Hoping to be told
These are just lies
Born of spite
So removed from reality
You can’t feel your emotions
Imprisoned in your body
A blood clot trapped
In an injured fingernail
Trying with all your might
To decipher
These abstruse tribulations
Everything seems slower
An attempt to tread deep water
Every sound more intense
A cymbal clanged at your ear
You struggle to form words
Your attempts merely falter
It wears off
This uninvited unlikely defender
The gushing pain of reality rushes in
Igniting every nerve in its path
You beg with all your might
For
The painless grip
Of shock’s buffer


Loss
The one thing meant to stay
Gone forever
A shattered crystal of certitude
Only a fleeting memory
Lingers
Of something previously guaranteed
The safe cocoon of belonging
Once a constant
Now fitful
Profound loss
A journey of regret
It always starts there
Left alone
Torn and bewildered
In a world you don’t belong
The ache of grief too painful to contain
It seeps out
Coats your existence
Trailing a stench of despair
A lost soul in a foreign land
“Had I known this wouldn’t last forever”
Your forlorn hope
No one else can feel it for you
A lost limb you cling to
As you trudge through the pain unapologetically
Determined to heal completely
With it as a crutch
Lifeless
You will it to resurrect
It withers, rots, dissipates
An empty chasm remains
Only then does the pain lessen
As you allow healing to pour in
The ache dulls
Most of the tears dry
You now see clearer
All frills washed away
A cathartic release
Impermanence embraced
The road to acceptance unfolds


Fear
A spineless thief of mortal greatness
A pathetic coward
Boldness its sworn enemy
A miserable temptress
Timorous and conniving
Craving constant company
In its lonely fortress
It cringes in fright
Whenever you try to wander
Away
From its empty threats of blunder
And failure
Ever cunning
Trying to keep you submerged
