Poetry writing has proven proficient at helping me see what is there to be seen. I will see or hear or reflect on something which then provides an image, a nuance that emerges in a word, a line. The single line and image, written, provides a cadence, a focus of sound and echo that invites a second line, and more. Usually, they come quickly and run until they tell me they are done and the poem is complete. This book draws upon such poems over a pair of sweeps of my history plus a sampling of more current poems that strike me as desirable in this collection. These pieces of my past often recollect for me the occasion but also leave that occasion obscured and allow the poem to do its work of creating an image and a flow in my own mind. The poems, in my experience, write their meaning on my mind. And, I hope, on yours as well. For then the poems do their work.

Foreword
The practice of writing poetry has been an active part of my life for about forty years now. It all began with the observation that some of the things I wrote as a pastor came off with a definite cadence, a flow with a sense of rhythm. That led to experimentation with the strains of free verse which increasingly began to sort itself into a regular meter. Rhyme sometimes occurred, more often in the sense of internal rhymes, half rhymes and varied assonance. I enjoyed playing with the sounds and flow of the poems, nearly always based on what I had observed that day.
I remember ends of days in which I sat silently at a table and mused over the day, lending my pencil to a scrap of paper or an old envelope to scribble off some lines – rarely more than 25, often less than that. I still find that poems appear in sets of 9 to 19 lines most often. They appear with an image and the start of a line, even a whole line. In fact, that first line comes and insists on its break, entering the second line of the stanza in such a way that the energy of the lines is propelled into that second line, or the third.
I soon came to a sort of understanding of the way the lines worked, the way the sounds interplayed and worked off each other much as dancers work off each other in a rapt pas de deux. Often enough I found I disagreed with the “authorities” – those who say that the important words end lines whereas I found them (in my reading as well as my writing) occupying the beginning of the lines.
