Description

The other riders that had journeyed with the sheriff had finished warning the farms that surrounded the town and were now returning at the gallop towards the gate. Already men were running to the walls while others carried bundles of arrows placing them on the walkways for easy access. Women could be seen gathering their children and taking them to their homes with many saying quick goodbyes to their husbands and sons.

Introduction by A. G. Harrison

Introduction

From the time human felt the necessity to communicate, he realized the value of the written word and wrote by drawing on cave walls, clay tablets, stones, papyrus, parchment, paper, and today, with the development of technology, he has created e-books.

The object "book" is classified in industrial products, but at the same time it is a cultural good. Personally, I emphasize both of its dimensions, but mainly in its cultural dimension. I consider the book to be the most important expression of culture because quite simply, in addition to being the same work of art, it supports all other expressions of culture.

As an industrial product, through the many stages of its creation and before it reaches the hands of the reader, it financially supports a wide range of professions, such as writers, philologists, translators, designers, publishers, paper merchants, printing houses, bookbinders, distributors and, finally, bookstores… Let us not forget, of course, that today it also greatly supports the huge online market industry.

The governments of many countries, studying and delving into the economic benefits of the book, have invested and supported this industry in various ways, which flourished and offered them great financial gains.

Starting with the Sumerians, Babylonians and other peoples of Mesopotamia, who wrote on clay tablets, Egyptians and Romans, who wrote on papyrus, the Jews on parchment, the evolution with handwritten books images in the Middle Ages in Europe, the creation of the first wooden typographic elements and paper by the Chinese, who printed the first books, the discovery of metallic elements by the German Johannes Gutenberg during the Renaissance and the really rapid development of printing in 1450 until 1456 and, finally, during the 19th-20th century the Industrial Revolution, which makes the production of the book flourish are some examples of the value of the written word.

The agony and effort of all these civilized societies, over time, in various parts of the world, teaches us that the book is an integral part of human existence.

Throughout this course the book records and transports from the depths of the centuries ancient civilizations, which teach us about the mistakes that we can avoid or imitate the achievements of our ancestors and adopt timeless principles and values, supplies for survival. but also the evolution of the human species.

By reading a book, we have the opportunity to create with our imagination the heroes of history, landscapes, various objects, etc. In the pages of a book, the author, in addition to his study, research, experiences, also expresses his feelings. He makes us members of his own world and gives us the opportunity to learn.

It helps us to acquire knowledge but also to enrich our vocabulary, improving our own writing.

It contributes to our mental alertness, increases the ability to focus, improves our memory, helps to develop our analytical mental abilities, entertains us, calms us down and helps reduce stress.

Of course, apart from the importance of touch and contact with a hot material, reading a quality book contributes significantly and decisively to our self-education, the cultivation of critical thinking, the upgrading of our aesthetics and consequently contributes to our quality of life.

It conveys art, informs, cultivates the spirit and the soul, elevates intelligence, finds solutions to problems, conveys messages, circulates ideas, forms consciences.

I hope my books convey a message of personal experiences and you could find segments of your own truth as well.

Thank you in advance for being here and being ready to start reading.

An hour later the elf scout arrived, he spoke of Oakwood and Yellowstone and of two strangely clothed humans and what they had done. He dismissed the elf and considered the logic behind the invasion. Four hundred trolls is a powerful force but not sufficient to hold ground this was either a reconnaissance in force or just a large raiding party either way it is a prelude to what was to come in the following days if the stories of orcs at Table Mountain were true.

He watched as his companies of elves continue to arrive with his offices directing them to their campsites. He knew he needed time, as his army would not be fully assembled until well after dark.

He had also learnt from his reports that the trolls were slow in following up and thanked the gods that they were. Time was not his friend. He knew if he was in their position he would expect a major counter attack by now, so a slower more cautious pace should be expected.

Out of the western trees the General noticed a rider galloping across the field, which made the general stand expecting to hear of some disaster. The rider pulled up hard on his horse then leapt off almost out of breath. ‘Sir! Lord White Star is coming he should be here shortly.’

The general dismissed the rider thinking I was right this is a disaster.A short time later Lord White Star came riding out of the trees like a conquering hero followed by a dozen Elf Knights all dressed in their finest armour. This was followed by several voices behind him so he glanced back and saw several of his Captains had arrived all watching the Elf Lord with a few muttering unpleasant remarks.

Lord White Star’s horse stopped before the general with the Elf Lord surveying the elves before him then he dramatically announced ‘I am taking command of the army you are dismissed Cenwalch!’

General Cenwalch surprised by the Lord’s audacity yelled back while using his deep military voice. ‘By whose authority?’

‘By my authority only the King is higher!’

‘Only the King can dismiss me and he has not done so’ bellowed the General.

‘Don’t make me arrest you Cenwalch. Stand down and I will forgive this insolence’ commanded Lord White Star which was in reality just a cold-blooded threat.

Eight Captains with over two hundred elf warriors moved up to support their General ‘It would appear that not everyone would agree with you my Lord!’ General Cenwalch stepped forward to proclaim with all the malice he could muster. ‘Enough of this nonsense! You will go to the bridge and follow my orders! Tomorrow the Troll Army will be destroyed and if I hear that you have deviated from my plan. I vow you will be hanging by your neck by this time tomorrow. Have I made myself clear!’

The Elf Lord looked down from his horse and saw all the defiant faces of the elves standing behind their General then he decided the numbers were against him so he snubbed the Elf General then turned his horse and rode off at a gallop followed by his personnel guard.

Three hours before sunrise the elf army broke camp and moved into position with the Wood Elf archers climbing the trees while the heavy infantry waited further back to conceal their presence. While further up the road heavy lancers waited five hundred yard from the road ready for the order to close the trap.

General Cenwalch had made a point of visiting every company that night and, told his elves that the two goblin leaders must be the first to die and that it was essential that not a single troll be allowed to escape. He declared if the trolls never learnt what happened to their army speculation would do more damage to the troll moral than the truth.

The sun rose like any other morning with the mist filling the hollows, which also hung heavily in the trees hiding the elves from their enemy. As the sun climbed over the distant mountains the mist on the road refused to disappear, then they heard the sound, the dreaded sound of heavy feet pounding the road still nothing could be seen and yet, it grew louder.

The general heard a movement behind him and turned to see a runner ‘Lord White Star is ready.’

‘Good! Now tell the heavy lancers it is about to start’ whispered General Cenwalch. Troll heads appeared through the mist. They were walking three abreast and were the first trolls the general had ever seen. He was amazed by their size then wondered if the other elves were thinking the same. Closing the borders for all these years has hurt us more than anyone had realised.

A horrid voice tore through the air and the trolls stopped, then General Cenwalch could hear more orders being given. Unexpectedly the trolls began unslinging their shields in preparation for charging the bridge, which was still some five hundred yards away. At that moment another runner appeared and whispered ‘The trolls are completely inside the trap.’ The General dismissed the runner with a wave of his hand and indicated to his trumpeter to get ready. A few trolls became distracted from their goblin leaders and began sniffing the air before looking into the trees. To the general’s dismay many horrid sounding voices could be heard along the line making the goblins pause, something was wrong. The Elf General realised the time had come so he gestured to his trumpeter and he blew a long single note.

The air went dark as it was filled with arrows followed by screams. The trolls were slow to lift their shields for protection. Everywhere gaps in the troll line appeared as the elf archers had their lethal effect. The general saw one of the goblins fall covered in arrows while the other ran through his column screaming orders. The trolls back away down the road in a turtle configuration which greatly surprised the general as he never thought they were capable of such a military tactic.

Meanwhile the heavy lancers filled the road to block the retreat and prepared to charge. These elves were all High Elf Knights wearing armour and plate as were their
