Dedication
I would like to dedicate this book to my dear friend, Melody Nettles. She was the sweet soul that helped me when I was on my own personal journey from the darkness into the light. May she rest in peace. A precious friend gone too soon. Her legacy lives on through her children, Ruthie, Lizzie, and Kenny. You are the very best she had to offer. I see her sweet spirit living through each one of you. You bless me with joy and laughter, especially you, Kenny Nettles.
Acknowledgements
I would like to thank God who placed certain people in my life’s path who encouraged me to write. One of those certain people entered my life in 1986. She was an adjunct university English professor who believed in my ability to formulate a story and communicate that story on paper. She planted a precious seed within my being that caused me to have hope that one day I would be a published author. She believed that I had talent as a writer. That seed took root in the garden of my novice author’s heart. Thank you, Professor.
Secondly, I must acknowledge and thank my sister, Karen, who nurtured the seed placed in my heart by the English professor. Decades later, in 2003, I wrote a rough draft of the book you now hold in your hand. I recorded my work on a computer disc and mailed it to my sister who, at the time, lived two states away from me. She read the book and loved my work. She could identify with the characters, Kendall, and Karen. As life with children often does, I got too busy with daily life and put myself on the back burner, and my writing went by the wayside. Karen sheltered that dormant seed of a computer disc, believing that one day I would resurrect my passion for writing. Then as only the Good Lord could, during the covid pandemic, he caused my youngest daughter to encourage my dream of writing and arranged for me to self-publish another book that I had written much later in life called, A Woman Discovered. I had success with that book and remembered the long-ago book, Kendall’s Journey . I contacted my sister, and she graciously mailed the computer disc back to me. But there was a problem, I had written the book on Windows 95. The operating system in my new laptop could not read the outdated disc. I was heartbroken. But all was not lost. My grandson, Landon, came to my rescue. He found a computer program that could translate my book into a readable dialogue. Thus began the long process of editing, updating, and rewriting. Thank you, Landon. I appreciate all of your help.
I would also like to acknowledge another family member for his patience in my endeavor to bring this book to completion. I do my best writing in the middle of the night so, thanks to my husband who picked up the slack by doing the laundry, cooked the meals, and ran the errands. I am eternally grateful. Thank you for your sacrifices that allowed my dream of writing to come true. I am truly blessed.
To all the unmentioned family members that helped get this manuscript ready for submission, I thank you. The countless unpaid hours did not go unnoticed nor unappreciated. I am truly blessed with the best family members who support my dreams.
I would like to encourage anyone with a story to tell, believe in yourself and write. You never know what God will do with your talent.
About the Author
Cynthia Veverka lives in a small community in north central Indiana where the winters are cold, and the summers seem long and hot. She shares her home with her husband of four decades and counting. They have six grown daughters who now have families of their own. Cynthia loves her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren very much.
When she isn’t writing or helping with the grandchildren, she is tending her flower gardens, picking strawberries from her strawberry patch (in season), or riding her bicycle on the peaceful country roads.
Introduction
This inspiring story shows how Kendall Butler, a woman who battles the demons of depression and despair with only the comfort of her Arabian horse, Journey and beloved Siamese cat, Shadow. She seeks to be loved, honored, and cherished by her family, but they fall short, being absorbed in their own lives.
Then a drifter, an ex-rodeo cowboy, Jake Allen, enters Kendall’s life and they strike up a friendship. Kendall’s wealthy architect husband hires the ex-rodeo star to manage his ranch, Butler’s Ranch. Jake turns Kendall’s world upside down. She is torn by her feelings for Jake as a friend who supplies her emotional needs and her husband who satisfies her material needs. Life gets to be too much for Kendall when she discovers her husband’s alleged affair with his secretary, Ann Kimmons. This circumstantial evidence sends Kendall in a tailspin. Does she engage in her own affair with the cowboy who loves and cherishes her, or does she remain faithful to her husband who has betrayed her heart? She is confused and decides that the world would be better off without her. After a failed suicide attempt, she is forced to receive treatment at a rehabilitation facility in Oklahoma. She discovers her value and worth and successfully finds her place in this world, with a renewed faith in God.
This is a book of redemption and hope. The purpose of this book is to show that a person can triumph over adversity through faith, courage, and perseverance, tempered by wisdom and forgiveness while learning how to be comfortable in their own skin.
The author also believes, through personal experience, that life is a journey, and the destination is determined by the attitude and choices a person makes along the way.
“Although today He prunes my twigs with pain, yet doth His blood nourishes and warms my root. Tomorrow I shall put forth buds again and clothe myself with fruit.” Christiana Georgina Rossetti (1830-1894)
“Because He has loved me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him securely on high, because he has known My name. He will call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue and honor him. With a long life I will satisfy him and let him see My salvation.” Psalm 91:14-16 (NASV)

One BONNIE GRACE’S ANNOUNCEMENT
Sleep would not come to Kendall’s anxious mind. Grant and Kendall Butler went to bed, at their usual time, around nine-thirty p.m. After lying there awake for a while, she decided to slip, ever so cautiously, out of her husband’s slumbering embrace. After successfully making her escape, she quietly tip-toed down the wooden carpeted staircase. She went to the kitchen, poured herself a glass of wine and grabbed herself a chocolate fudge brownie, discreetly wrapped in a paper towel. Dressed in her rose patterned silk pajamas, her sleek silk robe, and embroidered slippers, she quietly opened the rear patio door of their spacious, two-story country manor. Praying, with all her might, that the beeping security chime would not wake her sleeping husband. Every night, Grant insisted that his wife go to bed with him, whether she was ready to retire for the evening or not. Kendall was Grant’s cuddle bug, and he needed his wife beside him so he could fall asleep comfortably. Kendall, not wanting to displease her husband, did as she was told. Most nights, after her nightly prescribed sleep aid, she had little difficulty drifting off to dreamland. On this evening, sleep eluded her.
Kendall felt as free as an iniquitous fugitive, as she relaxed in her favorite patio lounge chair, on the terrace. Kendall delighted sitting in her quiet place by the pool. She found comfort under the pink old-fashioned, rambling rose hedge that gracefully arched over the massive stone retaining wall. It was as if the tender soft blossoms enfolded her in
