Description

By most women's standards, he would be considered rakishly handsome, while the men he did business with sometimes called him a pretty boy. He was an old hand at barroom fighting and seldom lost a fight. And he was used to spending long hours running around his boat as it heeled over to port or starboard under full sail, or by swimming every chance he got, his body was in exceptionally good shape.

Introduction by A. G. Harrison

Introduction

From the time human felt the necessity to communicate, he realized the value of the written word and wrote by drawing on cave walls, clay tablets, stones, papyrus, parchment, paper, and today, with the development of technology, he has created e-books.

The object "book" is classified in industrial products, but at the same time it is a cultural good. Personally, I emphasize both of its dimensions, but mainly in its cultural dimension. I consider the book to be the most important expression of culture because quite simply, in addition to being the same work of art, it supports all other expressions of culture.

As an industrial product, through the many stages of its creation and before it reaches the hands of the reader, it financially supports a wide range of professions, such as writers, philologists, translators, designers, publishers, paper merchants, printing houses, bookbinders, distributors and, finally, bookstores… Let us not forget, of course, that today it also greatly supports the huge online market industry.

The governments of many countries, studying and delving into the economic benefits of the book, have invested and supported this industry in various ways, which flourished and offered them great financial gains.

Starting with the Sumerians, Babylonians and other peoples of Mesopotamia, who wrote on clay tablets, Egyptians and Romans, who wrote on papyrus, the Jews on parchment, the evolution with handwritten books images in the Middle Ages in Europe, the creation of the first wooden typographic elements and paper by the Chinese, who printed the first books, the discovery of metallic elements by the German Johannes Gutenberg during the Renaissance and the really rapid development of printing in 1450 until 1456 and, finally, during the 19th-20th century the Industrial Revolution, which makes the production of the book flourish are some examples of the value of the written word.

The agony and effort of all these civilized societies, over time, in various parts of the world, teaches us that the book is an integral part of human existence.

Throughout this course the book records and transports from the depths of the centuries ancient civilizations, which teach us about the mistakes that we can avoid or imitate the achievements of our ancestors and adopt timeless principles and values, supplies for survival. but also the evolution of the human species.

By reading a book, we have the opportunity to create with our imagination the heroes of history, landscapes, various objects, etc. In the pages of a book, the author, in addition to his study, research, experiences, also expresses his feelings. He makes us members of his own world and gives us the opportunity to learn.

It helps us to acquire knowledge but also to enrich our vocabulary, improving our own writing.

It contributes to our mental alertness, increases the ability to focus, improves our memory, helps to develop our analytical mental abilities, entertains us, calms us down and helps reduce stress.

Of course, apart from the importance of touch and contact with a hot material, reading a quality book contributes significantly and decisively to our self-education, the cultivation of critical thinking, the upgrading of our aesthetics and consequently contributes to our quality of life.

It conveys art, informs, cultivates the spirit and the soul, elevates intelligence, finds solutions to problems, conveys messages, circulates ideas, forms consciences.

I hope my books convey a message of personal experiences and you could find segments of your own truth as well.

Thank you in advance for being here and being ready to start reading.
Chapter One

Previously

Out at the crash site once more, Connie repeatedly dove into the fuselage and oftentimes came up empty handed, but she continued diving anyway. At first, seeing the bodies of Terry and Penny’s husband, John, bothered her, but by the third dive she was able to ignore them completely. Most of the things she brought up didn’t float and had to be taken all the way to the beach every time she came to the surface. The things that floated she released and let the sea breeze push them ashore and into Penny’s waiting hands.

After two hours of this effort, she was moving past exhaustion and when she came ashore with another load, she looked at the pitiful pile of what they’d been able to salvage. Tired beyond belief, she lay in the warm surf that continually lapped up to the hot white sandy beach and she completely relaxed her body by willing herself to stay still. The dry sand that was a few feet from her was far too hot for her to lie on it, so she stayed where she was.

A couple of times Penny walked by Connie, and when Connie looked she noticed that Penny had removed most of her clothing as well, including her bra, but unlike Connie, she had kept her wet shoes on. Penny had a square, pleasant looking face and seemed to have a smile that resided there permanently. Her brown hair was short, barely covering her ears and she had round soft brown doe eyes that looked friendly.

Penny saw Connie’s expression and said, “With just the two of us here on this island, I didn’t think I needed to keep these damn things covered, but that coral that’s out there might cut my feet, hence the shoes.”

“Good idea, the shoes I mean.” She stood up and once more looked to the sea.

Revived somewhat, Connie forced herself to go back into the water and swam out to the wreckage again. By now her arms and legs were beginning to feel like sacks of potatoes. Underwater, her heartbeat echoed louder and faster in her ears as she held her breath and repeatedly dove into the fuselage. As tired as she was, her time below was limited to only a minute or so and that became even less as she continually pushed herself, making one more dive, and then making yet another and another, and another.

Finally, both mentally and physically exhausted, she floated on her back as she slowly paddled to the beach, and once there sat in the shallow water looking back and forth between what was left of her beautiful plane and the waterlogged skin on her hands. When Penny approached and said something to her, Connie had to shake her head several times to force herself out of her mounting depression, but it was hard.

“Connie, come on and rest, you’ve done enough for today. Let’s share a coke and bury Linda. I’ve got a hole dug up there beyond the trees by that little hill, but I’m going to need your help carrying her there.”

“How’d you dig a hole? What’d you use?” Connie asked incredulously.

“A plastic container washed up and I used that. The ground is all lose, coarse sand and coral so it was easy to dig a hole. I managed to dig down about three feet. I’m sorry it wasn’t deeper but the sides kept falling in.”

“I’m sure it’ll be fine, Penny. Give me a few more minutes and I’ll help you move her,” Connie said, looking over at Linda again. When she did, she thought about the two men out there, their bodies were still in the fuselage and wondered why Penny hadn’t asked about her husband? She had to know he was dead yet she didn’t ask or even look like she even remembered him. Connie figured that if that’s what it took for Penny to get past this and keep functioning on the island, then Connie was determined not to reminder her about John.

“Take your time, here have a drink,” Penny said and handed Connie a plastic bottle of coke that was half gone.

“Where’d this come from?” Connie asked taking the bottle firmly in her hand before taking a long pull on it. Even though she had spent the last several hours in the water, she was parched.

“All different kinds of plastic bottles washed up. I thought you did it,” Penny said.

“No, all that stuff was stored behind the galley. It must have come free when the tail section broke away. How much did you recover?”

“At least a case of beer in bottles and about three cases of various kinds of pop. Nine bottles of champagne came in too. ”

“I don’t believe it! I’m not used being this lucky,” Connie declared.

“A few items of food came in too, but as it stands right now, we don’t have much to eat.”

While Connie had been working hard at pulling several tools, wire, and other things like that from the cabin wreckage, Penny had been busy trying to keep them alive as well. Maybe she wasn’t such a rich spoiled brat after all. Connie looked at the young woman standing next to her, a woman that was dressed in noting except her panties. Connie said, “I’ve got a few more dives to make before I quit for the day. I’d like to see if I could recover our bags and maybe find the transponders.”

“Can’t it wait until tomorrow?” Penny asked, sitting down next to Connie.

“No, by tomorrow everything might be gone. We have to get what we can now.”

Both women sat looking out at the shining pieces of aircraft showing just inside the pounding surf.
