Description

This religious fiction book follows Christian Mitch Saunders as he lives a faith-filled life and comes to understand the messages God is sending him.
After serving in the military for twenty-eight years, Mitch Saunders now owns a business and hires his services to top one hundred companies, helping evaluate prospective sites for expansion. For a two-week period, he finds himself traveling from his home base in North Carolina to Loveland, Colorado, to work for a client. Single and a devout Christian, Saunders leads a faith-filled life centered on loving all people.
An avid outdoorsman, Saunders explores the surrounding area while staying at a comfortable and welcoming bed and breakfast inn, meeting locals everywhere he goes. As he reads his Bible before going to sleep one night, he thinks about his recent interactions. Things have happened that make him wonder if God is trying to tell or show him something.
A novel, The Gentle Spirit encourages Christians and those who are struggling with their spirituality. Through Saunders’ journey, it shows non-Christians why and how to accept Jesus Christ as their savior. It communicates the importance and power of prayer and the daily study of God’s word.

AUTHORS PREFACE
This fictitious book was written to encourage Christians and those that are struggling with their spirituality. The intent is to show non-Christians why they should, and how to accept Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord. Also, to show Christians how to accept things that may come from the Lord, and to follow His directions as they are on their journey of serving the Lord for God’s honor and glory. It intends to show that prayer is powerful, and should be a continual part of a Christian’s life and to study God’s Word daily. The names in this book are fictitious and any person’s real name is simply coincidental. Some liberties were taken in describing certain situations that add a little sensationalism to that particular event. Although, they may not be realistic to some readers, they model the movie industry to interject some drama. Those incidents begin with an asterisk. It is written in a simple, easy to read structure for a purpose.
I pray that you not only get something edifying and uplifting from this book but also enjoy the portrayal of an engaged Christian on his own journey in life. Hopefully this book will leave the reader pondering what may happen following the end of the book. Enjoy!
CHAPTER 1

A joyful heart is good medicine,
Proverbs 17:22a KJV

The loud but pleasant voice over the cabin speaker jolted Mitch Saunders from his nap. “Please return your tray table and seatback to their locked and upright position. Turn off all electronic devices and fasten your seatbelt. We will be landing shortly.” Mitch put the marker in the book he was reading and placed it in his briefcase.
The flight was uneventful until they started the descent to the Denver International Airport. The weather forecast called for thunderstorms that afternoon, and the 737 had to pass through the billowing dark-gray clouds. There was no way around it. The plane tossed and turned, bounced and jerked rigorously. Passengers moaned, gasped, and screamed at every movement of the plane. A baby crying and a small caged dog barking added to the chaos. Although Mitch had become used to such events during his numerous flights, he bowed his head and said a silent prayer. Not so much for his safety but for the peace, comfort, and safety of the other passengers and flight crew. The plane was soon through the turbulence, and Mitch could hear a big sigh of relief and numerous clapping hands and high fives. He just whispered, “Thank You!”
The pilot used all of his skills to land the plane smoothly, helping to make up for the uncontrollable few minutes of nature’s fury. Nearly everyone was talking joyfully, the baby was happy as his thirst was being satisfied without interruption, and the Pomeranian puppy was panting heavily but appeared content as the plane taxied to the terminal. Of late, Mitch enjoyed watching people and their various reactions to situations impacting their daily lives. It seemed to take the pressure off his own issues especially when he was mysteriously compelled to offer assistance to those in need. Many times people would politely reject his offer to help, sometimes people even took offense at him even asking, but from those who took him up on his offer, his heart felt so much satisfaction and usefulness. Mitch’s life was so intertwined with instances where he wished he had taken up someone’s offer of assistance. He put those thoughts behind him for the time being as he reached the baggage claim.
As he waited at the terminal curb before crossing to the car rental area, the same young woman with the baby from his flight came up and waited beside him. Mitch could not resist saying hi and smiling at the baby. The baby smiled back, and Mitch made some funny faces that caused the baby to giggle. The patrol officer stopped the traffic and motioned them across. They said goodbye as he held the baby’s soft, inquisitive hand. Mitch left the airport with a huge smile.
It was Friday afternoon. Mitch normally started his business travels on weekends. He did this to take some time to scope out the area for the various top one hundred companies that hire him. He thought about this as he drove north toward Longmont, then on to Loveland. The prospective properties are in Greeley, east of Loveland. He has made reservations at a recommended bed and breakfast in downtown Loveland, hoping it would fit his needs for peace and quiet. He had considered higher up in the mountains toward Estes Park but thought better of it thinking the beauty, wildlife, and cool evenings would be too distracting.
As Mitch turned the Jeep Gladiator onto Howard Street, he spotted the house, and as he turned into the parking area, he knew it was the perfect place. A quaint Victorian-style house with a steep roof and numerous dormers, light-blue siding with white trim, and a wrap-around porch nestled back from the tree-lined divided street. As he removed his luggage, backpack, and briefcase, Mitch observed the surroundings. People were taking strolls or walking their dog. Birds were chirping happily, except for the agitated mocking bird protecting its nest, which was built too low to the ground. It was late spring and the flowers were in bloom; the fountain in the middle of the immaculate maze-type promenade was making a mountain stream-like bubbling and splashing sound as the water fell back to the pool. White wicker furniture adorned the porch with welcoming plush cushions. His first impression was a pleasant one, and once again his heart was at peace and he had a smile on his face.
The spring storm had passed on by but the gravel parking lot still had puddles of water here and there. Mitch stepped carefully to the three steps up the porch to the registration door.
“Hello, you must be Mr. Sanders!” exclaimed the girl behind the counter.
“Well, no. It’s Saunders with a u,” replied Mitch still smiling.
“Oh, so it is. I apologize!” stated the girl embarrassed.
“No problem. A common mistake, and I’m used to it.” Mitch smiled as he put down his belongings and stepped to the counter.
“Please sign the register, Mr. Saunders. Your room is ready but we’ve already served dinner. There are many good restaurants in the area that I’m sure you would enjoy. I can recommend a few if you wish,” she offered.
“No, thank you,” Matt replied. “I had a late lunch but I think I will change into something comfortable and take a brief walk along the street. I may stop somewhere for a late snack.”
“Where are my manners?” she gleefully questioned herself. “We serve a late treat on Friday and Saturday evenings for our guests so that the owners can meet and greet everyone. It is around nine, if you are interested!”
“That sounds pleasant and very convenient for me.” Mitch replied. “I’ll plan on joining you.”
“We have two large and very nice rooms in what we call the Attic or the third floor. I’m sure you will be pleased with the accommodations. Yours is Room 1 up the stairs and to the right; it overlooks the garden in the back and has a full view of the street out front. Let us know if you need anything or if there i
