A fter Cleo’s ordeal and her stay in the hospital, Jake, Jacob and Cleo all headed home and tried t o get back into a so-called normal life. As months went by Cleo soon would come into labor.
CLEO. Jake it’s time.
JAKE. Time, aren’t you forgetting that today is Saturday? I don’t have to work today.
CLEO. No Jake it’s time, time to go!
JAKE. Go? Oh, it’s time to go!
Jake jumped out of the bed, grabbed his clothes and the bag and started out of the bedroom.
CLEO. Jake, aren’t you forgetting something?
JAKE. What?
CLEO. Me! Come on Jake we have rehearsed this a thousand times. Call Karen, so she can come over and sit with Jacob.
Jake picked up the phone dialed Karen’s number, but before the phone could ring Karen picked up.
KAREN. Jake its time, isn’t it?
JAKE. Yes, it is what are you doing up at this time of night, and how did you know it was me? Never mind.
KAREN. I’m on my way.
Shortly after they got off the phone the doorbell rang. Jake answered the door. As Karen walked in Jake and Cleo walked out.
JAKE. Everything is in place, see you soon. Take care of Jacob for us.
KAREN. Now Jake, you know that you don’t have to tell me to take care of Jacob, I’ll take care of him as if he was my own.
Jake and Cleo got into the car. Cleo looked at Jake as if she wanted to cut his throat.
JAKE. What, what did I do?
CLEO. I’ll take care of him as if he was my own, I bet she will. I bet she’ll not only take care of Jacob, but of Jake also.
JAKE. Breathe Cleo breathe.
CLEO. Jake cut it out, I know how to breathe, you just make sure that you don’t forget who’s the boss of this family.
Jake looked over at Cleo and just smiled.
JAKE. What can I do?
CLEO. Just make it to the hospital Jake, just make it to the hospital!
They soon made it to the emergency room Jake jumped out of the car and ran into the entrance. He shouted; my wife is in labor out here! A nurse grabbed a wheel chair and headed out. They assisted Cleo in getting out of the car.
CLEO. My husband didn’t make a fool of himself, did he?
NURSE. Oh no, we’re use to men like him. You know, the big emergency. Uh, sir you can go into the waiting room. You have to check her in.
JAKE. Check her in! She is about to have my baby!
NURSE. Yes sir, I know but she still has to be checked in.
Jake stood there with a crazy look on his face. He started to walk toward the waiting room. But the security guard stopped him.
GUARD. Sir you can’t leave your car parked there. You must move it into the parking lot.
Jake just looked, he walked outside got back into his car and found a spot on the lot and parked. It turned out to be a good thing, because all of the information he needed to check Cleo in was still in the car. He grabbed the information and headed back in. Once he got in, he found a phone, he picked it up to called Faye. Just as soon as he started to dial, Dennis and Faye walked in.
JAKE. How did you two know? Let me guess, Karen?
FAYE. How did you guess? So, where’s Cleo? Has anything happened yet?
JAKE. Hold it, no more questions my baby will get here when she gets here. Hello Dennis.
DENNIS. Oh, hey Jake.
JAKE. What’s up Dennis, is there something wrong?
DENNIS. Oh, nothing I’m just still trying to wake up, I would have to pick tonight to stay up until the T.V. signed off.
JAKE. Oh, you’re trying to be a night owl?
DENNIS. Well, I thought since we are off tomorrow, well today. I thought I would stay up. You could have told Cleo to hang on.
JAKE. Dennis, it doesn’t work like that, you’ll find out some day.
Jake looked over at Faye.
JAKE. Not anytime too soon, I hope.
They all had a good laugh. Jake went up to the desk but just as soon as he was about to start checking Cleo in the nurse came out.
NURSE. Sir, do you want to come into the delivery room?
Jake looked at Dennis.
JAKE. Yes, I do. I wouldn’t miss it for the world. You see Dennis this is what real men do. Faye, would you mind finishing checking Cleo in?
NURSE. Come on mister, wait a minute, what’s oh yeah Mr. Martin, come on we have to get you ready.
Jake rushed in, washed up but all of the gowns were too small so he just grabbed the largest size and put them on and started to the delivery room, but just as soon as he walked in, the gown ripped. But it was too late to go back out so he just stayed in there. It wasn’t too long before the doctor was delivering Jake’s baby girl. Jake looked at her like he had never seen a baby before, it was something special, something very special about her.
NURSE. Mr. Martin, Mr. Martin are you OK?
Jake looked at the nurse and smiled.
NURSE. Mr. Martin, we have to ask you to go back to the waiting room while we go and clean up baby Martin.
As Jake walked back to the waiting room, he saw Faye, Dennis and Mr. and Mrs. Johnson.
JAKE. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson what are,
FAYE. I called them I figured they would want to be here to see their new god-daughter.
JAKE. Thanks Faye.
As they all waited for the nurse to bring baby Martin in. Mr. Johnson said a prayer, he prayed for the health of Cleo and the baby, he ended by asking for peace in the Martin house. The nurse soon brought Brentley Bertha Martin to the window, she was so beautiful, it was as if she had a glow about her, her eyes were as round as two marbles, they were as dark as the night itself.
MR. JOHNSON. She is a beautiful baby, but where did you get that name from?
JAKE. Well, Cleo always liked the name Brentley and she never having a chance to meet my mother she decided to give my mother’s name as her middle name
MR. JOHNSON. I see
FAYE. She certainly is a beautiful baby, so beautiful.
DENNIS. Wow!
It was only a few days until Jake and all of his family were back home. When they made it home, Jake stood in the middle of their house and began to praise God for all that he has done, and just for his life in general.
Dennis and Faye were back at their home going over their plans for their wedding.
FAYE. Now that Cleo has had her baby we can move forward with our wedding.
DENNIS. I don’t see why we had to wait in the first place.
FAYE. Men! Dennis, Cleo didn’t want to be my maid of honor while she was pregnant, dummy.
DENNIS. Oh, I see.
FAYE. Dennis I sorry.
DENNIS. Sorry for what?
FAYE. I should not have called you a dummy, and besides if you were a dummy, you would still be my dummy, I love you, Dennis.
DENNIS. I love you too.
They continued making plans for their big day.
The next day was Sunday and after church Dennis wanted to go over to Jake’s
DENNIS. Faye I’m going over to talk with Jake.
FAYE. Okay, give them my love. Tell him I would have come but today is my resting day.
When Dennis arrived, he saw Jake just walking around and looking up into the sky.
DENNIS. Jake what’s wrong, what’s going on?
At first, he just looked at Dennis as if he didn’t know him.
JAKE. Oh, not much, what’s up with you? How long have you been here?
DENNIS. Are you okay, I’ve been here for a minute, I was calling your name but I guess you didn’t hear me? And I guess you didn’t see me either.
JAKE. Yeah, I’m fine, what do you want?
DENNIS. You look as if something is wrong. You look so serious, like there’s something urgent on your mind but you can’t think of it. Is Cleo and the kids all right?
JAKE. Yeah, everything is all right, yeah later.
Dennis hurried back home; he ran into the house yelling for Faye.
FAYE. Dennis what’s the matter? You’re yelling like someone is after you. What’s up?
DENNIS. Faye, Faye, Faye I got to
FAYE. Dennis calm down catch your breath and spit it out, now tell me what’s wrong.
DENNIS. I made it to Jake’s
Faye cuts him off.
FAYE. There’s not anything wrong is there?
DENNIS. Give me time. Like I said I made it to Jake’s and he was just standing outside looking up at the sky!
FAYE. And so, what’s wrong with that?
DENNIS. He was just looking up at the sky, and when I called his name, it was like he wasn’t there. It was like he was stoned or something.
FAYE. Not Jake.
DENNIS. I knew he wasn’t stoned but he seemed to be out of his mind. I just knew something wasn’t right. I asked about Cleo and the kids, he said that they were okay, but something was just not right. Call Cleo and see if she’s ok.
