Walking through Clouds

It was the sixth of June, yet the weather would have even fooled a groundhog that it was February. The mist covered his face while he stared into the gray abyss of nothingness. The fog was thick and unrelenting, inescapable within the confines of the city. If he traveled five minutes by automobile in any direction from the city lines, he could escape into the sunshine. The city’s fog trapped her citizens, and though the sun was shining on the other side of every bridge, most people were happy not to cross it. That was the true magic of San Francisco.
The sum of his regrets now seemed to sum up his life. He wondered if his past would shape his future or if he would be able to start anew from scratch. He realized that he would never escape his past, and this led him to a feeling of great despair. However, he did not fight this feeling. Despair, despite its negatives, at least reminded him he was alive. The alternative was apathy, and that was the feeling he had tried to avoid for as long as he could remember.
On this particular overcast summer day, the fog brought him a sense of relief. This was not inclusive only to him but to all people who had stopped pretending to be happy. Their mood would not enhance because it was going to be a “nice” day. To the depressed and agitated, the worst thing can be the sun gleaming with blue skies and birds singing. For these people, the sun was upsetting, making fun of their disposition and attitude. The sun was condescending, whereas the fog was empathetic.
The land clouds completely blocked his view of the Golden Gate Bridge from the cliffs that stood half a mile from the beach. He traveled four miles from his house to arrive at Ocean Beach. On a day like today, no one came to this beach except those who desired to be alone. He didn’t have a driver’s license, a constant reminder of a past he was desperately trying to forget.
