Description

In this, the second volume of the Addlestone Chronicles, the focus is
on the Nazi’s vision of creating a ‘Master Race’ in preparation for their
1000-year Reich. To accomplish this, they promoted, arranged, and
eventually only permitted, ‘breeding’ between genetically ‘pure’ Aryans.
This Europe-wide programme was called Lebensborn.
Set in the mid-1930s, action takes place in England, Germany, Italy,
and France. A wealthy, young English upper-class couple, James and
Louise Harcourt-Heath, are recruited as spies by the British Security
Service department, MI5. After unearthing the secrets of the primary
Lebensborn facility, they are assigned to continue their espionage activities
at the 1936 winter and summer Olympic games in Hitler’s Germany.
Both novels offer readers fast-moving and gripping adventure stories as
well as historical warnings. Parallels are evident between the conditions
in Europe in the 1930s and political developments today in the US,
the UK, and elsewhere. Similar circumstances enabled fascist dictators
in Germany, Italy, Spain, and Portugal.
The third volume of the Addlestone Chronicles is set to be published in
the autumn of 2022. Partially set in Ireland, it follows the same English
couple’s attempts to unearth Nazi spies in the neutral Irish Free State
and prevent the Nazi kidnap of a physicist, working on nuclear fission
at the Cavendish Lab in Cambridge, England.

Historical Background
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

I wish to thank the many friends who have supported my efforts at fiction and have critically proofread earlier versions of this novel. Amongst those, I include Colin and Jenny Day, Dex Marble, Linda Howe, Lynne Olds, Linda Holst Long, and my dear sister, Phyllis Kuehn. All have provided their skills, wisdom, and encouragement to this embryo project as it has developed over the last nine years. The cover photo of the Alps was taken by Linda Holst Long.
INTRODUCTION

It is my intention that The Addlestone Chronicles be read in chronical order. The first book, set in Britain, France, and Germany in the mid-1930’s, covers the adventures of the main characters between October 1 st , 1934, and July 20 th , 1935.
This, the second book, follows the same characters between then and August 19 th , 1936. The primary theme is the development of the various ways in which the two UK Secret Service agencies, MI5 and MI6, attempted to confound Hitler’s aims at European domination.
In the introduction to Addlestone, I explained the source of my inspiration for this series. Some thirty years ago, I purchased The Brides Book. Written by Dorothy Stote, the guide’s target audience was upper and upper-middle class brides in the mid-1930s. It only saw publication for three years. The book was illustrated with pictures, photos, and advice to potential brides with chapters covering such topics as selecting the appropriate trousseau, jewellery, beauty tips, honeymoon destinations, and so forth.
Nine years ago, in an idle moment, I pulled the book off my shelf. I discovered that the back pages of this book were filled out with handwritten details of the wedding of Rose Gregory and Norman Paine. Presumably Rose purchased this book for guidance and to document her own nuptials. According to the notes, their wedding took place in the small Surrey village of Addlestone on July 24 th , 1937.
In Lebensborn, I continue to catalogue the circumstances that gave rise to European fascism. The focus is the Nazi’s bizarre vision of creating their Master Race in preparation for their 1000-year Reich. Their aim was to do so by promoting, arranging, and eventually only permitting by law, ‘breeding’ between suitable Aryan couples.
In Addlestone, the first book in this series, I attempted to draw readers’ attention to parallels between the circumstances present in Europe in the 1930’s and the lurch to extreme right-wing political ideology currently observable in the US, the UK, and elsewhere. Destabilizing conditions for democratic processes are currently present, but only partially as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Legislation restricting voter participation, the so-called trickle-down economic agenda, and partisan legislatures, have contributed to the growing inequalities in the distribution of income and wealth. Billionaire oligarchs are now able to use their wealth to influence elections. Racism, anti-Semitism, xenophobia, misogyny, and the widespread assault on human rights have been the consequential result.
The fledgling democracy created under the Weimar Republic government in 1920s Germany, was dysfunctional as compromise proved to be impossible. Voting by representatives was divided along strict political party lines. Historians regard this as the primary and the indeed the necessary condition that enabled Hitler to rise to power, embrace fascist policies and rhetoric, and take control of Germany.
In these series of novels, apart from attempting to offer my readers a fast-moving and gripping adventure story, my aim is to provide an historical warning. Presently, we face similar circumstances which allowed the rise of populism, nationalism, and the fascist dictators that existed in 1930s Germany, Italy, and Spain. History never takes identical routes. Having said that, circumstances are such that a proto dictator could and would likely attempt to take power, suspend or dispense with civil rights, jerrymander the voting processes, and prevent the orderly transfer of power following democratic elections.

SATURDAY, JULY 20 TH , 1935 ST PAUL’S CHURCH, ADDLESTONE

“In the presence of God and before this congregation, Louise de la Béré and James Harcourt-Heath have given their consent and exchanged marriage vows. They have demonstrated and declared their love by the joining of hands and by the giving and receiving of rings. I therefore proclaim they are husband and wife.”
Reverend Paterson brought their right hands together in his. “Those whom God has joined together, let no one put asunder.”
The church organist played Widor’s Toccata while the couple slowly walked down the aisle, Louise supporting her husband with her uninjured right arm. Outside the parish church, Peets, Woburn’s chauffeur and footman, opened the Railton’s passenger door and offered to drive the bride and groom the short distance to Woburn Hall.
James demurred. He was careful not to strain his stomach muscles during the five-minute drive home. Still in some physical discomfort from his gunshot wound, he was elated at finally being married to Louise after their event-filled, nine-month engagement.
A drinks table was set up near the marquee entrance and a slightly elevated bandstand erected to the right. As soon as the bride and groom entered, the seven-piece ensemble began playing music Louise had selected for the reception. As the guests were finding their places, Jarvis, the butler, opened bottles of champagne, and Peets poured the wine into flutes resting on EPNS trays. After the glasses were filled, the speeches began.
As best man and fiancé to James’s twin sister Bea, Donald Hutchinson’s speech was both amusi
