Major Selling Points
The Bereaved is a Sophie’s Choice story of a woman’s treatment and a mother’s lack of options in the late 1850s in New York City as the Civil War foments and erupts.
A genealogical detective as well as an accomplished writer, Julia Park Tracey brings to life her ancestors in story, and this is her niche. The Bereaved originated from a discovered ticket from the Orphan Train among her grandfather’s artifacts and research led to a missing great grandmother, which brought forth this untold and beautifully imagined novel about an even darker side of the Orphan Train.
The lover of historical fiction will be immersed in 1859, from the gritty rendering of the filthy streets and crowded tenement housing of New York City to the woman crafts in which Martha excels and tries to parlay into income to support her family after her husband’s death. Each detail, from the lay of the land to the neighbors in the tenement, is historically accurate and makes the story compellingly real.
Author Julia Park Tracey is well known in Alameda, Sonoma, and Nevada counties in California where she has worked as a magazine editor, columnist, writer, and now as Executive Editor for Sibylline Press.
The author is social media maven with thousands of followers on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.
Book Clubs will have a field day navigating the choices facing a woman in 1859, including the rights to her own body and the guardianship of her own children.
Readers can expect a new novel Fall 2024, showcasing another woman ancestor from the Puritan and witchcraft era of 1725.
Park Tracey has a Master’s Degree in Early 20th Century British Literature, and is an alumna of the Community of Writers (at Palisades/Tahoe), Lit Camp, and Napa Valley Writers’ programs. As an editor, she has developed and edited hundreds of writers’ works.
“Julia Park Tracey’s The Bereaved is a novel that weaves its intimately detailed characters into your soul. At once heart-breaking, heartwarming, and absolutely beautiful, this is a story that captures the devastation of loss and the power of enduring hope.” —Lauren Hough, author of Leaving Isn’t the Hardest Thing
