This book is dedicated to the men and women of the US Armed Forces who died to preserve the freedoms we enjoy, to the men and women who currently serve our great country and to the men and women in the CIA, FBI, Department of Homeland Security, law enforcement and to the elite Navy SEALs that fight terrorism around the world.
This book is also dedicated to Admiral Elmo Zumwalt, Jr., a brilliant military leader who served his country in three wars and who achieved the pinnacle of success in the Navy who I admire greatly.
To Ian Fleming, my favorite author who created James Bond and who inspired me to create my fictional secret agents Dr. Clint Conner and Nikolai Aleksandrov.
To Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman, two cinematic geniuses who produced the greatest film series in history and who inspired me as a young boy with their James Bond movies.
I also dedicate this book to the innocent victims of the 9/11 attacks and their memory, and to all the covert CIA agents who are fighting the War on Terror around the world.
Finally, I dedicate this book to my parents whose love and guidance inspired me to pursue my dreams.
PREFACE
Bond, James Bond! When I heard those words from Sean Connery in “Dr. No”, I was hooked as a fan forever. I was a young boy watching a double feature of “Dr. No” and “From Russia with Love” with other friends. I had never heard of James Bond but after those movies I would follow every new 007 film. To me Connery was the perfect Bond and always will be. Later that year a new TV show premiered on NBC. It was called “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” What was this new show? From the opening sequence where an enemy agent fired at a man with a gun hidden behind a bullet proof glass it was pure excitement. My father and I would watch this show every Friday night. The show featured two secret agents named Napoleon Solo and Ilya Kuryakin. Solo was an American and Kuryakin was a Russian. Robert Vaughn played Solo and David McCallum played Kuryakin. They would battle an organization named T.H.R.U.S.H.
Every week they would go on a mission all over the world. The show was a huge hit its first season. It was James Bond for America. These three fictional agents inspired me to create my fictional agents Dr. Clint Conner and Nikolai Aleksandrov. An American and an American born Russian working as a team. Conner would have a PhD in nuclear physics from MIT. I named Clint Conner after my two favorite actors Clint Eastwood and Sean Connery. Both agents would be experts in martial arts and fluent in multiple languages. They would be bachelors and seduce beautiful women like Bond. They would be given the latest technology and equipment to carry out their missions. Like Bond they would operate out of the shadows and kill enemies without mercy. Like Bond who has a 007 license, Conner would have a 911 license and Aleksandrov an 811 license. They would be elite Navy S.E.A.L.s recruited by the CIA to join a new secret division called S.W.I.F.T. devoted exclusively to fighting terrorism. They would be sophisticated, intelligent ruthless operatives dedicated to the defense of the U.S. Their adversary would be a powerful evil terrorist organization named BLACK MAMBA after the deadly African snake. This entity would be global in scope and consist of every terrorist group in the world. Its existence would be a secret for much of the book and its leader would be known as ALPHA, a mysterious criminal genius hidden in silhouette on a secluded island in the Pacific. I am proud of this book as it took several years to write. It is my hope that everyone who likes James Bond will find this book entertaining. There is violence throughout the book, but I wanted the plot to reflect the reality of modern terrorist groups. To portray the heroes in fictional situations that would be believable. NUCLEAR STRIKE
MONDAY
SEPTEMBER 11, 2023
NEW YORK, NEW YORK
12:00 P.M. EST
It was the twenty second anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Mayor Richard Smith was at ground zero along with Senator Sandy Bright. Thousands were also there to honor the memory of those who died. It was a beautiful day.
Mayor Smith said, “Today is the twenty second anniversary of the terrorist attacks launched by Al-Qaeda against our great nation. We are here to honor the memory of the brave Americans who died that terrible day. Much has changed since September 11, 2001. Terrorist groups have been damaged by the efforts of the CIA and our allies. Our nation’s economy is on the rebound. Much of our military has come home from Iraq and Afghanistan. Terrorism is still a threat to the US. We cannot let our guard down. Our enemies will always be seeking ways to destroy this great nation. Please bow your heads in a moment of silence in memory of those who lost their lives.”
Over the last several weeks US intelligence had picked up information about a potential attack on the US homeland on the 9/11 anniversary. The CIA considered it another idle threat from a new terrorist group, the United Jihad Front (UJF). In the last several years terrorist organizations had been gutted by drone strikes and assassinations carried out by elite Navy SEAL teams.
One operation resulted in the assassination of Osama Bin Laden on May 1, 2011, in Pakistan. Americans were feeling better about themselves. Martin Roberts had been elected president in 2020. He planned to give a speech to the nation at 8:00 p.m. EST from the White House regarding the 9/11 anniversary and the latest threats from UJF. President Roberts was sitting in the Oval Office working on his speech. It was 12:15 p.m. EST when presidential aide Sam Hunt walked into the Oval Office with a briefcase. He put it on the president’s desk.
President Roberts said, “Thanks Sam.” Hunt replied, “Here are the latest intelligence reports on the new terrorist threats sir.”
President Roberts said, “I will look at them in a few minutes. Call CIA Director Bob Griffith and have him on the phone in fifteen minutes please.” Hunt replied, “Yes sir, Mr. President.”
