Dedication
This book is dedicated to my sisters. First there’s Charlotte. She will be the first to tell you, she’s the smartest and she may be. Next, we have Lillian. Then there’s Alice, she is a great cook and she always seemed to think she knows better than Betty Crocker. She always needs to change the recipe, to make it her own. This is where I come into the picture. Followed by Sharon, who recently went home to be with the Lord. Finally, there’s Sandi , who is extremely supportive and always offering me suggestions.
Chapter 1
Heading to Chicago Dee and John are discussing the past year. After receiving a frantic phone call from Savannah, they were going to head out last night, but Dee’s husband explained that it was not a life and death matter and it would be better to leave in the morning. Jim would have gone with them, but he was just starting a big remodeling job and needed to stay. As they were driving John says, “If someone would have told you what our life would be like a year and a half ago, would you have believed them?”
“Let’s see.” Dee starts in, “Ok, a year and a half ago I didn’t know I had been kidnapped at 2 months old. I didn’t know my mother; well the woman I thought was my mother. Would end up committing suicide and the man I thought was my father end up in prison. Stabbed to death by a man he stole thousands of dollars from 33 years ago. I find my real parents, sister and you, my cousin. After all the deceit and deception in my life, my real family would turn out to be honest and loving people.”
John jumps in, and begins saying, “We start an investigating business together. That I’m proud to say is doing very well. You marry Jim, the man of your dreams. Things weren’t all that smooth, but we rode the waves and now we need to go back and help the family.”
Dee says, “When I called back and talked to mom, she said Savannah was calming down some.”
John asked, “Now what exactly was Savannah saying?” Dee tells John, “She’s yelling into the phone, and saying, “Help me, Dee, help me. Jeff has been arrested and they have him in jail. They came to Jeff’s apartment and took him away in handcuffs.” I told her we’d come.
John asks, “But that’s Jeff Brown the police officer, she’s dating right?” Dee says, “Yes, now she wasn’t making sense. I hung up and called mom. She tells me they don’t have any details yet. Dad was at church going over Sunday’s sermon and would be home soon. I told her we would be there.”
John says, “Remember how she was always talking with those online dating men. Always sending them money, and they would promise to come and see her and buy her things. Gosh, we were the ones to talk her into dropping them, and find a nice guy, right here, where she could have a safe relationship. I really thought those two would be getting married soon. What do you think happened?” Dee replies, “I don’t have a clue, he seemed like such a nice guy. I can’t imagine. No clue.” John asks, “Hey while we’re in Chicago want to stop in and see Instructor Ben, that guy was a big help in us getting our license? Are we stopping at The Country Café for lunch?” Dee says, “Yes, let’s go see Instructor Ben. I don’t think this truck could pass The Country Café without stopping.”
About 30 miles farther and there was their favorite café. Once inside and the waitress brings the menus. They order hamburgers, fries and chocolate shake. They had decided to have their favorite Coconut Cream Pie on the way back home. Back in the truck, John tells Dee, “You know when you bought me this truck, when we first started the business. I really appreciated it but if you don’t mind, I think I’m going to trade it in for a newer one. Nothing wrong with it. I just saw this one the other day that caught my eye.” Dee laughs at John, “It’s your truck, you don’t need to ask me. Go for it. By the way, you haven’t mentioned Penny from the library lately?”
John said, “She is really nice but I’m not ready to settle down and start a family and I think that’s what she’s after. I don’t want to lead her along.” John continues, “Did you ever figure out how much money those online guys got out of Savannah?” Dee says, “Well as much as I can tell from what she admitted to me, I’d say $5,000.00 maybe $6,000.00.”
Dee continues, “Savannah is so smart, very pretty but a little naive. I was hoping after she worked for her friend’s detective agency awhile, she would join us. You know we could use a bookkeeper, secretary.”
Dee gives Jim a call and tells him, “We should be at mom and dads in a few minutes, so I figured I should call before I get there. I will call you after I learn the details. Love you.”
Dee and John went into the house and Mary and Tom greeted them. Dee throws her arms around Mary and says, “Oh, mom I’ve missed you. Are you ok? How’s Savannah?” Mary tells them, “She’s resting, she’s very distraught.” John asks, “Uncle Tom, you doing ok? How’s little Julie?” Mary says, “You know I was worried when we adopted little Julie, we were too old for a six-year-old. I’ll tell you she is what’s holding us all together. She’s up in her room napping.” Savannah comes downstairs and sees Dee and John and falls apart. She cries, “What did I do, why did this happen. Why can’t I find the right man, what did Jeff do?” Mary said, “Tom why don’t you take the kids in the family room and Julie and I will make supper.”
Once they were in the room, Tom closed the door and Savannah started asking, “I need to find out why Jeff was arrested. Can you guys help me?” John asks, “What all do you know. Slow down and tell us exactly what happened.” Savannah said, “Ok, so yesterday around 1:00, I go to Jeff’s apartment for lunch. He had made spaghetti; we ate and went into the living room. We had just started watching a movie, it was Jeff’s day off. Suddenly someone was pounding on the door, and yelling, “Chicago police, search warrant. Open the door. Jeff had gotten up to open the door when the door flew open knocking Jeff down. The two officers are on top of Jeff handcuffing him. The third officer is telling me not to move and comes over and handcuffs me. Jeff is yelling, “Let her go, she doesn’t know anything.” Savannah continues, she tells them, “Everything is kind of a blur. Two of the officers are searching Jeff’s apartment, they come out of the bedroom with a backpack, which seemed to satisfy them. They are taking us to the door, I ask for my purse. One officer grabbed it but didn’t give it to me. They take us to the police station in separate cars.”
Savannah stopped for a minute and Tom says, “I get a phone call from Savannah telling me to come to the police station. I go there not knowing what’s happening. When I get there, I was told to sit and wait.” Savannah starts in again, “They questioned me forever, and finally said I could go but not to leave town and be available for questioning. I tried to ask about Jeff, but they just ignored me. I still don’t know what’s happening. Jeff is a police officer. What is happening?”
John tells Savannah, “Look in the morning Dee and I will go to the station. I met this officer when I was working on the Hill case. Maybe he can tell us what’s happening.” Savannah jumps up and says, “That’s great. Can you guys go now? Please.” Tom says, “Now Savannah, they just got here after a long drive. I’m sure they are hungry and tired. Let them get a good night sleep and I’m sure they will be up bright and early.”
Dee says, “Yes if we want all the information it’s best to wait a while. Right now, we probably would only get half the story. Do you know any of his family or maybe a friend?” Savannah thought and said, “I did meet his partner and his girlfriend. I think I have her number; Liz and I were going to meet and go shopping. We never did.” John says, “Well you could call her but if it’s all a mistake, maybe Jeff wouldn’t want her to know anything.” Savannah says, “Oh well, I’m going crazy. I’m going to call her if I can find her number. They went thru my purse.” Savannah is searching for her purse and comes over waving a piece of paper. “Got it.” John says, “Now Savannah, just ask her if she’s seen Jeff today. If she knows anything, she’ll know why you’re asking. If she just says no, say you thought he was coming over earlier and leave it at that.”
Savannah dials the number, phone rings, two times, three times. Liz answers, “Hi, this is Liz, can I help you?” Savannah gulps and says, “Hi this is Savannah, I was just wondering if you saw Jeff today. I thought maybe Lyle and Jeff stopped by?” Liz almost screamed into the phone, “Ok, what is going on, what do you know?” Savannah looked like she was going to pass out and John took the phone. He says, “Hi, this is John, Savannah’s cousin. It sounds like you know there is a situation going on. Savannah is very upset, maybe we can piece this together. What is it that you know?”
Liz starts in, “Lyle and I were just going into his house at about 2:00 after grocery shopping. Before we could get everything inside, two police cars fly in the driveway and four officers run up yell
