Chapter 1 PRESS CONFERENCE
“I n a Dead pool situation, the water in a reservoir is too low to make the turbines generators turn, to create hydro electricity. No generators revolving, means no electricity generated or water. No electricity, no lights, no air conditioning, no water for business and agriculture, no nothing.”
“If the lake behind the reservoir is full, that’s called a full pool.”
“Dead pool can also mean the water is not high enough, to flow over the dam to create electricity or water.”
“Remember, water changes is part of climate changes,” Dr. David Elliott, head of the California’s State Climate Agency, told the Press Reporters.
He was holding a Press Conference to explain the dire drought situation, for the State of California, its 39 million people and the US.
“A big 70%, of the US vegetables, is grown in California. Two thirds of the US fruits and nuts are also grown here,” he told the Press. They need water to grow.
“California has been in the mega drought classification, for the last three years. We have had a severe drought for the last 13 years.” he added.
“On the drought categories, the lowest is slight with the highest category being a mega drought. There are six categories. In these last three years, no rain has fallen, during the rainy season. We’re now at the mega drought category now, the highest,” Dr. Elliott explained to the Press Members.
He opened up the Press Conference to questions, at the end, from any members of the Press. There were many questions for him. A lot of hypothetical questions, about what he predicted for the future for Californians.
After the Press Conference, Dr. Elliott, known as Doc, headed first, back to his Office, then he would go home to his family, Sarah, his wife and their two boys, Andy, age 8 and Danny, age 9.
Dr. Elliott, was California’s Chief Senior Climatologist, and led the California’s State Climate Agency Office.
The State of California was suffering the worst drought, in 1,200 years. They knew by looking at tree rings, that tells when climate changes occurred. The rings told wet years and dry years.
The main reservoir’s water level, in California, was down 60% and dropping fast. The lakes that fed the Los Angeles Reservoir, were down by 70%.
Snow was not falling in the mountains, during the winter months, to feed the lakes. The lakes and rivers, feeding the reservoirs, were drying up. One fed another.
Chapter 2 HIS OFFICE
A t his Office, Doc found his team of two Junior Climatologists, Wayne and Susan Jackson, busy arguing with each other.
“That’s the dumbest thing, I’ve ever heard come out of your mouth. Pipe water from the Mississippi River. That water belongs to the people, in the middle of the US, not the people of California. They are down too in water level. In addition, the river is over 1,400 miles away. You are going to get a super long straw? You lunk head,” Susan said, practically yelling at him.
“Well, it’s just there, available to take,” Wayne said.
“No, it’s not available to take, you idiot,” Susan yelled.
Arguments between the two got heated, at times.
They had been yelling at each other, for over five years. Doc was used to them, arguing and yelling, at each other. They, also, were married to each other, for the five years.
Dr. Elliott could never figure them out. Lovey, dovely, one minute, yelling at each other, the next minute. That went back and forth.
He had heard idiot, dumb head, lunk head, and other name-calling. Five minutes later, it was sweetie, honey, lovey, baby and other nice nicknames. Go figure, Doc thought.
“I can’t take you guys today, I’m going home early. You have my cell number, if you need to get ahold of me. I’ll be in late tomorrow, I’ve got that morning meeting, over at the Governor’s Los Angeles Office tomorrow,” he told them.
As he walked out the door, he turned around and saw them kissing. Oh, well.
They were such good, hard workers, he tolerated them and their quirky personalities and a relationship that kept him laughing. Usually he enjoyed watching the show.
Chapter 3 THE GOVERNOR’S OFFICE
T he Governor commuted between the Los Angeles Governor’s Office and the main Governor’s Office, in Sacramento, California, the State’s capital.
At home, Doc, found his wife, Sarah, making dinner and his boys watching cartoons on TV. Sarah worked from home, as a Hollywood talent agent, for some of the big stars.
The dinner was a roast, salad, small potatoes, baby carrots, bakery chocolate cake and Doc’s favorite, chocolate ice cream.
He could eat chocolate ice cream, for every meal, including breakfast, if his wife, Sarah, would let him. He did not know why he loved it, so much, but he did.
Chapter 4 GOVERNOR’S MEETING
A ttending the Los Angeles meeting, was Governor White, Assistant Governor Johnson, Doc and the other heads of each State Agency Department, including Dr. Marilyn Johns, the California’s Environmental Protection Agency head.
“Doc, I’m going to be announcing a State-wide Water and Electricity Executive Emergency Order and a Plan, on Friday, Can I have some ideas from your agency, where to save water and electricity, now and long term, on Wednesday?” the Governor told him.
“Sure, we’ll get right on it. I will call my staff, on my cell phone, to start my Team, on brainstorming ideas,” Doc told him.
