Chapter 1
Schenectady, New York
M elody Savoy spied the sign Matarazzo Law Firm and pulled into the parking lot and gingerly parked the rental car. It was a warm day in June in the downtown area of Schenectady, New York. Mentally noting the law office stood on the corner of Clinton and State, she checked the address Hal sent her on her cell phone. Gathering her pocketbook, she stepped out of her car, consciously smoothed her skirt, and gathered her confidence. It was her first day, and her first assignment away from the Quad in Seattle, Washington. She walked boldly towards the large double doors, stepping inside the scene gave way to a busy lobby. Sheila, the receptionist peered over her glasses from her desk and observed the newcomer. She could see the woman had purpose here. “ Perhaps, the new secretary?” she wondered . The woman would fit in. She certainly had the physical presence. Gorgeous long black hair against her ivory skin and a lean slender build, Yes, she’d fit in. She gave her a momentary look. Melody’s piercing blue eyes bore into her.
Melody strode over to the desk and said, “Hi, I’m Melody Savoy. I am the new secretary for Mr. Blake Matarazzo.” Melody glanced over to the name plate on the receptionist’s desk while anticipating her response.
Sheila answered, “Of course. I’ll just call to let him know you’ve arrived. You may continue through the double doors ahead.” The receptionist points towards the doors as she lifted the receiver.
“Thank you, Sheila.” Melody walked through the doors just as Blake Matarazzo was hanging up the receiver. She had noticed an empty desk to her right. That must be my desk s he thought.
“Oh, come in! You must be Melody?” He walked from around his desk to greet her. He extended his hand and firmly shook her hand. “Welcome. Please call me Blake.” Letting go of her hand, he thought of the phone call he had to make and how he had no time for a proper welcome. “Normally, I take a few minutes so we can talk, but honestly, I need to make an important phone call. So I’ll show you to your desk, let you settle in, and in about,” Blake looked at his watch, “say twenty minutes from now you can come back and we’ll discuss your duties for my office further.”
“That sounds fine. No need to show me; just point the way to me.” Melody was wondering about the call he was making.
“Wonderful. Go back through the door and to your left. Your desk awaits your arrival.”
“Thank you. I will be back in twenty.” Melody gave him her most official smile, turned, and was ready for her first assignment. While she exited his office, she couldn’t help but notice the long history of legal accomplishments tacked to the walls. She shut the door behind her, and she noted her desk stood studiously to her left, beckoning her attention.
Melody sat into the high-back cushioned chair behind the desk and opened the bottom drawer to her right. Finding it empty, she put her pocketbook inside for safe keeping. A few moments later, Melody heard some hellos. She looked up from her desk and saw a couple of employees quickly walk by with an enthusiastic wave. Melody smiled their way, but apparently it was just a knee jerk reaction to wave to anyone sitting at the desk. She chuckled to herself, thinking, d oes Hal really believe there is something unsavory going on here?
Okay, focus now. Blake Matarazzo is sitting just a few feet away. You are here on assignment. I appreciate Hal sending me here. It’ll be no problem watching after a handsome man. What a smile, and his eyes with that soft brown hue accenting his olive skin, and that hair, wow jet-black soft waves barely touching the collar of his Giovanni suit, tailored to his perfect, slender build. Melody shook her head and reminded herself again to focus. Yes, I must focus; she had to focus on the legal files on top of both sides of her desk, focus on the humming of the computer, and she had to check out the drawers which she did so expeditiously. Then the blinking caught her attention. She realized the phone was lit up like a Christmas tree. Quickly she thought, “You can do this, Hal would not have given you this assignment if he did not think you were capable of handling it.” Breathing in and out soon she felt calm. The buzzer on the phone made her jump. It was the intercom. Blake. Okay, girl you are on.
“Ms. Savoy, would you bring me the Laurent file? It should be on top of the stack on the left side of the desk.” Melody glanced down and quickly spotted the file. “Yes, sir. I’ll be right in.” Melody glanced at the time on the computer; her assignment was about to begin.
“Thank you.”
Melody entered into his office and walked directly to his now outstretched hand and handed him the Laurent file.
Football memorabilia and family photos surrounded Blake’s desk. His L-shaped desk was piled with legal files needing some sort of attention one way or another. He smiled as Melody walked into his office. Her beauty intrigued him as well as his curiosity. For a fleeting moment, he wondered why a woman of her candor was doing secretarial work. He brushed that thought aside. He was grateful he found a secretary as quickly as he did. His other secretary, Delilah, was out on maternity leave. He quickly opened the file and examined it before speaking to her. “Ms. Savoy,” he held out the file to her, “Could you set up an appointment with Mr. Laurent for next week? We need to go over some things.” She took the file and held it to her chest. “Yes, sir, and please call me Melody.” She gave him a brilliant smile.
“Okay, Melody it is.” Blake returned the smile but felt a striking sadness, as he could not help but noticed the scar on the left side of Melody’s neck. He wondered for a moment what troubles laid behind her piercing blue eyes. His deep thoughts were rattled by a loud voice.
“BLAKE!”
Melody heard thunderous walking and observed a tall, distinguished man walking long strides towards Blake’s desk. Before Melody left Seattle, her research revealed the law firm was well respected and operated by a father and son. That must be his father, Stephen Matarazzo thought Melody . I’ll just slip out. But Blake was too quick for her.
“What time are we meeting in court today?” Stephen asked.
Blake deferred his boisterous father by saying, “Have you met my new secretary, Melody Savoy?”
Stephen spun around and extended his hand to her. “Hello, I’m Blake’s father, Stephen. Welcome!” Melody shook his hand. Stephen’s handshake was firm, assured, and exuberant, whereas Blake was more low-key, his father was abrupt.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you sir.” Melody smiled. Blake nodded to her and she excused herself by turning to Blake saying, “I’ll get right on that sir, good day, Mr
