The Raven’s Call
It was in early spring while I was on my first visit to Sussex after his retirement that Holmes related the story I chronicle on these pages. He’d managed to acquire a rather large property at a steal of a price owing to the untimely demise of the former resident, a widowed retired schoolmaster by the name of Patrick Tamworth. It appeared Mr. Tamworth had been tending to some birdhouses he kept on the top of long poles in his back yard, when his ladder tipped over and he came crashing down, his dome striking a rock killing him instantly. Tragic loss for his family, but an opportunity to collect a bargain for my good friend.
The house was well maintained and boasted three bedrooms, each of which had its own fireplace, an ample kitchen with pantry, two and a half bathrooms, and a large central room adorned with walnut bookcases and a large central fireplace with a mantle that matched the bookcases and andirons of brass in the image of twin ravens. I arrived late in the day and we spent what remained of our evening reminiscing and we both retired early, Holmes hinting that he’d not been completely inactive in his retirement thus far.
The following morning after a hearty breakfast we settled do
