Have been employed as Surveyor at MBS Consultants, Singapore. 10/2002 – 10/2011 – Master Mariner/ Inspector/Surveyor/Pilot.
Engaged in Marine operations with various organisations & Ship Owners. The activities have included Pre-purchase and Condition Surveys, Project Cargo trans-shipments, IMCA Audits, Ship deliveries, On/Off Hire Condition Surveys, P&I and Underwriters’ Claims Investigations, including the gathering and preparation of evidence for the Expert Witness. Flag State Inspections. Change of Flag. Change of class etc. Marine & Technical Advisor to Plan & execute dry dockings and maintenance/improvements for their trades.
Giving advices and in special cases carry out operations in “cold weather areas” where heavy ICE often is an ongoing problem, both for Navigation & the ships equipment. 07/1990 – 2002 Master Mariner/Inspector/ Superintendent
In this period of time, I was engaged by Fred Olsen/Knock Tankers AS, Oslo Norway.
The company was building up a new tanker fleet. In the beginning of this period, the Owner bought in eight old Suez max tankers from the Greek company Myanmar and I was then working with dry dock operations/upgrading and changes of flag and class etc. In between I operated this vessel occasionally as Master to drill in the new crew and its equipment.
Thereafter I was changed over to the new building section at Harland & Wolf, Belfast, where Fred Olsen Company was running the shipyard, and build their own tanker fleet. I was there looking after the steel/equipment and paint work. I was Master on each vessel for a test period after the ship’s completion before I again went back to the yard for following up the construction of the next unit. At this time we also built sophisticated shuttle tankers for SPM operations in the North Sea, Chartered to “Statoil”. 07/1986 – 1990 Claim Manager, Marine Underwriters in Norway.
I started out as a claim secretary at Norges Brannkasse, Transport & Sea dept., but was fast promoted. This company was one of the biggest in Norway, but was sold to the Uni-Storebrand system. After some time, I moved over to “De Gjensidige Foreninger” at Aalesund. In my work, I was dealing with a great variation of claims spending from P&I, Casco, General Average, Passenger ships & Ferry boats, Fishing boats, Seal catching vessels for Greenland/Newfoundland area etc. Pleasure boats. The big variation and circumstances in this company were very encouraging and made it all very interesting. Charter parties, groundings, collisions and cooperation with shipyards etc. was a great challenge which gained me experience in all respect. 09/1980 – 06/1986 Permanently engaged at NOROBO, Grimstad, Norway.
This company built eight OBOs at Uddevalla shipyard, Sweden and I was Superintendent on all of them. The first one I took out as Master for a short period to line them up in trade, thereafter I went back to the yard for next unit. Especially the change over time between cargoes of bunker oil/heavy oil and sunflower oils and other clean products etc., and back to grain cargoes could be a “lesson to be learned”, but we always made it without any exception. We may be had the best system in the world for such heavy cleaning projects, which later on had given me many advantages – both on chemical tankers and on crude oil ships. 06/1963 – 08/1980 Permanently engaged at Einar Rasmussen’s Company, Kristiansand, Norway.
I started out as a 3 rd officer in this company, but made fast progress to 2 nd and 1 st officer. At this company, at an age of 30, I became Master on their product tankers, and followed up to do the same position on bulk ships and crude oil tankers. I was very much involved in planning and executions of maintenance work, and dry dock operations. I also spent two years as Superintendent looking after their new buildings at Mitsui Zosen, Chiba and Tamano. There I was in charge of the steel work and paint systems on the entire ship. The Bridge and Navigational instrumentation and all Safety installations was at my hand too.
Kind Regards
Capt. John Sverre Furnes

Introduction

“A Copy Only”
We’ve probably all in different contexts and situations experienced that our senses are not always reliable.
We can feel very secure in them, yet we experience that we thought incorrectly or took a wrong decision. In retrospect, one sees that one maybe should have set a few more questions and worry more before taking a stand for or against something.
This applies not only to “ordinary” people taking large or small decisions. It is also true for philosophers who through time, in different ways, have realized that neither senses nor rea
