PROLOGUE
Our First Time Meeting Each Other
The sound of a school bell rang out as groups of elementary school kids exited the building. Most of them met with their parents to head home, while other kids made their way to the playground to wait for their parents to pick them up. As the last of the kids left the school yard, a lone boy walked out slowly looking around to see if everyone left. Once he saw that no one was left in the school yard, he let out a sigh of relief and made his own way to the playground. He knew that there was a risk of him getting caught, but his Dad had told him that they would pick him up at the park today.
As he made his way into the park, he went to the furthest tree that was away from the playground and the rest of the kids in his class. The boy sat down, took off his backpack to lean back against the tree to read his book. He opened his bag and pulled out the book that he had borrowed from the library. “I wonder if they actually did kill the whale or if the whale lives?”
The boy said to himself as he opened the book, to start reading it since he had been waiting all day to continue to read where he left off. While reading his book the boy listened to the sound of the tree branches rustling in the wind, the birds chirping, and the distant laughter of the other kids. On this warm and pleasant spring afternoon at the park. But then his peace and quiet was interrupted by two of his classmates running up to him and calling his name.
“Hey William! Kenny wants to see you under the playground set!” One of the boys yelled as he ran up to William, to tower over him, with his friend.
“Does it have to be right now? I wanted to finish this chapter of ‘Moby Dick’ before my parents picked me up…” William pleaded as he held his book close to his chest.
“Nope, you tried to avoid us after we were let out of class… So now Kenny is mad and you know better than anyone what happens when he’s angry you’re not there.” The other boy said as the two boys moved closer and closer to William.
“You wouldn’t want Kenny to choose one of our other classmates to take your place? Do you?”
“Ok… I’ll go see Kenny… Just give me a sec-!” As William was standing up, one of the boys moved forward and snatched the book out of his hands.
“Hey! Give it back! I need to return that back to the library!” William shouted as the bully held William’s book over his head, Out of reach for William to grab it.
“You’ll get this back after your talk with Kenny! So don’t make this difficult now!” The bully said as he tossed the book to his friend while the two of them laughed at William’s attempt to retrieve his book. William stopped jumping after his book, and instead just accepted his fate. He walked with Kenny’s friends to the play structure, where Kenny would usually hang out until his parents picked him up.
“You’ll get your stupid whale book back after Kenny is done with you,” The bully said as he pushed William into the under part of the play structure. William made his way through the structure to the center of it, he noticed some of the other kids looked at William then immediately turned away. Most of the kids in his class, and most of the students in the school, knew that Kenny always bullied William everyday. After wandering around in the playground, William finally arrived in the furthest part of the play structure, where Kenny and the rest of his gang hung out. Kenny was leaning against the wall with his father’s leather jacket on, to make himself look more like a badass. His pals on the other hand, looked more nervous and kept glancing at Kenny once William arrived.
“Hey there Willy, You trying to run from me without giving me the lunch money that you owe me?” Kenny asked as he wiped the sweat off his forehead, as he was dripping from wearing the leather jacket in such warm weather. William instead of feeling fearful of Kenny was more worried for his health.
“But Kenny, my parents packed me lunch today… plus shouldn’t you take that jacket off? Because we wouldn’t want you to pass out due to heat exhaustion.”
William said while keeping a straight face in front of the whole group. Kenny’s sweaty face turned red with anger at what William just said, that he walked up to him and shoved William to the ground.
“Shut it you bookworm! All you ever do is read, draw and write all day! You even got in trouble with the teacher, because she caught you reading in class!” Kenny shouted out with anger, as he knelt down on William and started punching him in the stomach. William attempted to protect himself by raising his arms to block some of Kenny’s punches.
“Hey Kenny.. Shouldn’t you take it easy? You’re hitting Willy pretty hard there… What if one of the parents hears us?” One of Kenny’s friends asked nervously as the rest of the group all muttered in agreement. But Kenny looked even more pissed at the suggestion. “NO! Not before we destroy that book he has been reading...He probably cares more about that book’s safety than the injuries that he receives everyday!” Kenny said as he gestured for one of his friends to go and get the book from the boys outside the structure. When WIlliam heard them mention his book, he instantly pushed Kenny off him and stood up with is fist balled up. “Well looks like we finally struck a nerve with the silent statue!” Kenny said with glee as he walked closer to William to fight him. William made the first move by shuffling forward to meet Kenny and punched him in the gut.
Kenny doubled over as he groaned in pain after being punched in the stomach. Before William could even make another move, Kenny’s friends moved in to grab his arms and legs to stop William from moving. Kenny slowly picked himself back up while clutching his stomach, but had a smile on his face when he saw that William couldn’t move. “You shouldn’t have tried to fight back, when its a three on one you stupid loner!”
Kenny said as he punched William in the gut as pay back, over and over again to make William scream out in pain. William endured the repeated punches to his stomach and chest trying his best not to cry or shout.
“HEY! What the heck are you boys doing to my son!” A man’s voice shouted from behind the group of boys.
All the boys froze in place as they turned to see that William’s father had squeezed himself into the small play structure. Kenny’s friends let go of William and ran off before they would get yelled at. “Kenny! I was just with your parents just now, so don’t you dare run off after what I just saw!” William’s father said with such an angry tone that his son had never heard from him before. Kenny stood frozen in place after being called out too.
“Go tell your parents that I want to talk to them before you leave, because what I just witnessed is something I can’t forgive,” William’s father said as he walked past Kenny and approached his injured son.
Kenny just nodded his head without saying a word, and headed out the structure to find his parents. When he was leaving the room William noticed four boys watching from where his father entered from. They disappeared around the corner when William had noticed them, most likely to give him privacy.
“Are you alright? How badly did they hurt you?” Willia
