Proudly African
To God Almighty

for His mercy and grace without which we degenerate into folly and excess

To my Mum, Perpetua (aka Sweet Mum)

for her unrivalled love

“A true mother is the sunshine of her home, lightening all within her domain. She stands as the life-line of the family, sparkling with courage and strength, sweet fragrance of joy in her work and optimism about the future. Unalloyed, sacrificial love is the attribute of a true mother; in fact, she is compassion personified. She seldom counts any price too high to pay for them. And even when all around her fails, the fact of her children’s wellbeing is the reason why she wants to live.” (Anon)

Ever wondered why
So much trouble's on earth?
Wish they could just fly
Away like pains at birth?

Our mothers know how it is,
The great pains in labour;
But there's great joy after this,
A moment to savour;

Still there's much to ponder,
Just where did they come from?
There's every need to wonder,
For they have filled the drum;

We haven't lost hope,
Just a craving to know;
More easily will we cope,
And gather courage to sow;

It's been on for ages,
But won't last forever;
They come in different stages,
And they prove quite clever;

Now how do we trace it,
And where do we begin?
It seems a direct hit,
Often stop us singing;

We look up to the sky,
And the mind travels far;
All we can do is sigh,
Our troubles came from afar!
‘Let me get you a cup of coffee,’
Dr. Dominic said, trying to calm Stella’s nerves. The tension in the air was rather tense.
“That won’t be necessary, doctor. Please tell me, what’s the problem? What’s the cause of my husband’s illness?”
Dr. Dominic tipped forward, resting her elbows on the desk. “Well, his clinical symptoms have been rather vague,” she began. “As for lab studies, his white blood cell count should be less than 10, but his is over 100. And majority of his white cells are abnormal in shape and immature. Circulating through his body and reaching the brain, these premature cells have caused him to have a number of seizures.”
“What are you trying to say, doctor?”
“Try and relax, Stella. No matter how high this mountain may appear to be, I’m pretty sure we’ll be able to climb it successfully.”
“Does that mountain have a name?”
Dr. Dominic paused. She regarded Stella for a few seconds. She was a strong woman, and she seemed ready for the worst. But then again it looked like she could burst into tears any minute. “Stella, we…”
There was a knock on the door, and without waiting for an answer, Cynthia entered the office.
“The report is ready, Dr. Dominic,” she said.
“Not now, Cynthia.” Dr. Dominic made a gesture of dismissal with her hand.
“I’m sorry, Ma’am.” Cynthia left.
“Sorry for that interruption,” Dr. Dominic said, leaning back in her chair. “I was trying to say that…”
“Say it!” Stella shouted.
Dr. Dominic paused again. Then she swallowed hard. “I’m sorry, Stella. We don’t know what’s wrong with your husband.”
In 2003, Nigerians were reported to be the happiest people in the world following the results of a scientific survey carried out in 65 nations in 1999-2001. The research was reported by one of the world’s top science magazines, New Scientist, and was picked up by a number of news outlets. The report considered that the country's family life and culture were more important than its problems and material wealth in determining happiness .
A 2010 Gallup international poll reaffirmed Nigeria’s status as the “happiest people on earth”. The poll of 64, 000 people from 53 countries around the world found Nigerians to be the most optimistic in the world in their outlook for 2011.
However, a new poll conducted by the United Nation (UN) in 2012 based on national mood has rated Nigerians as the 100 th happiest people in the world. Denmark was rated as having the happiest citizens in the world, closely followed by their fellow Scandinavians Finland and Norway. The others are Netherlands, Canada, Britain and the United States making the top seven.
A Forbes Magazine survey released the same year (2012) ranked Nigeria as the 20 th saddest place to live on earth. In its analysis, Forbes said, “The best of the worst, Nigeria ranks 123 rd overall on the Legatum Prosperity Index.” Forbes Magazine stated that the position was arrived at sequel to the increasing level of insecurity, threat to livelihood and overall deteriorating level of standard of living of the people of Nigeria occasioned by widespread corruption.
Despite conflicting statistics, there is no gainsaying that Nigeria has recorded steady tremendous success in the international scene over the years. Education, entertainment (beauty pageantry, music, movies, etc), tourism and sports are some of the sectors making headlines.
Nigeria has a rich literary history, and Nigerians have authored many influential works of post-colonial literature in the English language. Nigeria’s best-known writers are Wole Soyinka, the first African Nobel Laureate in Literature and Chinua Achebe, the legendary writer best known for the novel, Things Fall Apart and his controversial critique of Joseph Conrad. Other Nigerian writers and poets who are well known on the international stage include Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, John Pepper Clark, Ben Okri, Buchi Emecheta, Helon Habila, Chris Abani, and Ken Saro Wiwa who was executed in 1995 by the military regime.
Nigeria has the second largest newspaper market in Africa (after Egypt) with an estimated circulation of several million copies daily in 2003.
Our Nigerian beauties have taken the world by storm, excelling in such beauty contests as M-Net Face of Africa and Miss World Beauty Pageant.
The Nigerian film industry (Nollywood) is budding with a variety of talents on daily basis, and is currently the 3 rd largest movie industry in the world after Hollywood (USA) and Bollywood (India).
This novel appreciates the exploits recorded in recent years. It delves into the ever fascinating world of modeling and beauty pageants, and with a touch of class draws attention to Nollywood and the tourism potentials of the country. It is a thriller, provocative, compelling and sensual, one whose characters are designed to operate in an atmosphere of grueling suspense, intrigue, love, sex, betrayal, violence, murder, such that readers are strapped into an unforgettable experience from opening page to shattering climax!

One

Tola was in the kitchen making toast for breakfast. She ran her hand up and down her belly, eagerly awaiting the day she’d put to bed.
She’d been excited about being pregnant, but she’d also been overwhelmed. Often she was irritated, tense, distracted, anxious.
