Away like pains at birth?

Our mothers know how it is,
The great pains in labour;
But there's great joy after this,

‘It’s okay, you have my support,’

Foxy said, offering a handshake. Tola was surprised by her rival’s sudden change of stance, but it seemed to go down well with her.
“You don’t know what this means to me,” Tola said under her breath, a feeling of gratification spreading through her.
Foxy opened the front door for her. “Please, be careful,” she told her.
Tola smiled. “I will. Thanks.”
She took one step outside, while Foxy watched.
“Hey,” Foxy beckoned on her, “aren’t you forgetting something?”
Tola turned around. “What?”
Foxy spread her arms wide, inviting her for a hug.
Tola held her warmly. “Thanks a lot, Foxy. I’ll never forget tonight.”
“Yeah,” Foxy sighed, putting her hand into the back pocket of her jean trouser as Tola turned away. “Fuck you!”
“What? Foxy… Aah!”
Tola winced in pain as she felt a sharp object penetrate her abdomen. She caught Foxy’s eyes, leaning over in agony, holding the knife. Those dark eyes were clouded with evil intentions. She knew she’d taken a risk — a big one — coming over to the enemy’s tent to do “peace talk”. But she felt she could work on Foxy’s mind and touch her heart the way she always did. As they say, the devil you know is better than the angel you don’t know.
“This will teach you not to toil with your best friend’s most prized possession,” Foxy said, scoffing at Tola. “Rot in hell!”
“Aaaaaaah!”
Tola groaned even more, the knife tearing her belly upwards to the level of her rib-cage. “My baby!”
She raised her blood-stained hand to her face to see if she was dreaming or not.
Thick, dark blood. Thick, dark blood!
She screamed aloud. Her eyelids dropped, and she fell to the ground.
In 2003, Nigerians were reported to be the happiest people in the world following the results of a scientific survey carried out in 65 nations in 1999-2001. The research was reported by one of the world’s top science magazines, New Scientist, and was picked up by a number of news outlets. The report considered that the country's family life and culture were more important than its problems and material wealth in determining happiness .
A 2010 Gallup international poll reaffirmed Nigeria’s status as the “happiest people on earth”. The poll of 64, 000 people from 53 countries around the world found Nigerians to be the most optimistic in the world in their outlook for 2011.
However, a new poll conducted by the United Nation (UN) in 2012 based on national mood has rated Nigerians as the 100 th happiest people in the world. Denmark was rated as having the happiest citizens in the world, closely followed by their fellow Scandinavians Finland and Norway. The others are Netherlands, Canada, Britain and the United States making the top seven.
A Forbes Magazine survey released the same year (2012) ranked Nigeria as the 20 th saddest place to live on earth. In its analysis, Forbes said, “The best of the worst, Nigeria ranks 123 rd overall on the Legatum Prosperity Index.” Forbes Magazine stated that the position was arrived at sequel to the increasing level of insecurity, threat to livelihood and overall deteriorating level of standard of living of the people of Nigeria occasioned by widespread corruption.
Despite conflicting statistics, there is no gainsaying that Nigeria has recorded steady tremendous success in the international scene over the years. Education, entertainment (beauty pageantry, music, movies, etc), tourism and sports are some of the sectors making headlines.
Nigeria has a rich literary history, and Nigerians have authored many influential works of post-colonial literature in the English language. Nigeria’s best-known writers are Wole Soyinka, the first African Nobel Laureate in Literature and Chinua Achebe, the legendary writer best known for the novel, Things Fall Apart and his controversial critique of Joseph Conrad. Other Nigerian writers and poets who are well known on the international stage include Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, John Pepper Clark, Ben Okri, Buchi Emecheta, Helon Habila, Chris Abani, and Ken Saro Wiwa who was executed in 1995 by the military regime.
Nigeria has the second largest newspaper market in Africa (after Egypt) with an estimated circulation of several million copies daily in 2003.
