To my LEGO player, dog lover, questio ner and forever friend-Jo shua.

Chapter 1
J oshua kicked a pebble on the sidewalk in front of his house. He was glad that school had ended for summer, but he was disappointed that his mother felt he needed to be outside in the sunshine every day. She was leaning over her raised gardening beds, carefully tending to the sprouts of green beans that were next to the tomato plants that they had planted over Mother’s Day. He was surprised that they had grown so tall already. He had heard people talk about having a green thumb, and he checked every so often to see if his mother had one. He couldn’t see one, but she did seem to make plants grow really qui ckly.
Joshua pushed his medium brown hair off of his forehead and walked up to his mother. “How do you get those beans to grow so tall? Why don’t the bugs eat the flowers in Marie’s garden or eat your vegetables? When will we be able to eat tomatoes on our salads? Have I been outside long enough? Can I go inside and play with my LEGOS now?”
His mother, Kate, looked lovingly into his blue eyes and laughed, “The beans are growing tall because of the sunshine, the water, and the fertilizer I’ve been giving them. The bugs don’t like the marigolds I’ve planted around the boxes, so they stay away from the vegetables too.”
“I’ll have to tell Marie about that the next time I see her,” interrupted the seven-year-old boy. “I wonder why we didn’t learn that in my plant unit in first g rade.”
“I don’t know the answer to that one, but we won’t be able to eat these tomatoes for quite a while yet. We’ll still have to get ours from the farmer’s market for a bit lo nger.”
Then Kate turned back to the planter box that had strawberry vines growing wildly. “It won’t be long before we can have strawberry short cake.”
Joshua interrupted, “Mom! Have I been in the sunshine long enough?” His small hands were fisted on his hips. “And why doesn’t Taylor need to be out here? He needs Vitamin D too,” he repeated his favorite vitamin fact from sci ence.
Kate responded without turning around, “Taylor was up before sunrise and down at the high school doing training for a basketball camp this summer. He and the rest of the boys trying out were doing long-distance run ning…”
“That doesn’t count if it was before the sun came up,” interrupted Joshua. Kate ignored the interruption. “...before you were even a wake.”
Then she looked back at him and almost laughed. She definitely needed to take him and his brother shopping soon. Both boys had grown so much this last school year, and neither one of them had summer clothes that fit. Joshua looked a little like a scarecrow with his shoulders poking out of his favorite t-shirt and his shorts hiked up around his thin legs.
“Yes, you can go inside. Please tell your brother that both of you need to be ready to go shopping for some summer clothes in an hour. Taylor needs to take a sh ower.”
“But Mom…” Joshua whined, “I wanted to play with my L EGOS .”
“Well, then you will want to scoot and get started as soon as possible since we’re leaving in an hour. Don’t forget to tell Taylor!” Kate said fi rmly.

Chapter 2
“T ake that, you alien!” Joshua yelled at Taylor, who was playing the part of the alien t oday.
“Ooooh, now you’re going to be taken over,” Taylor responded in a low menacing voice. He was so glad that his voice finally stopped changing. He was pleased with his deep baritone voice and the fact that people had stopped laughing when he talked. “Take me to your leader, or I will take you to my spaceship and return you to Alpha Cent auri.”
“Taylor, where is Alpha Sent-ar-ee?” Joshua asked in a strange whi sper.
“It’s on the other side of the galaxy,” Taylor replied with his arms still held out in a menacing mo tion.
Joshua replied, “I can’t take you to my leader because I don’t know who my leade r is.”
Taylor said, “Then I will take you!” He ran after his brother who squealed and tried to shoot at him with the Nerf gun.
