“N ooooo, noooo!” I screamed when I saw Davonte’s body on a slab in the coroner’s office.
“My son.” Georgia fell to the ground screaming, and I crumbled in the corner.
“I'm so sorry,” I said quietly.
At this moment, the guilt I felt was unbearable. If I had let him come home, if I would have taken his call, he might be alive. I was so ready to move out and be with Nakeem that I couldn’t think of shit else, and now he was dead. My heart hurt so much. Even after all he had done, I was in mourning for him. He didn’t deserve to die like that.
“I'm sorry for your loss.” The female detective who brought us down came to me in the corner.
“Did you find out who did it?” I asked as I wiped my eyes.
“Not yet, he was found in a park, and there was no evidence or even blood except on his person.”
“This is bullshit. If he was a white man, y’all would have the city combed by now,” Georgia snapped.
“We're doing our best. It’s only been six hours since the body was discovered. Can you tell us anything? Did he have any enemies?” She looked at me.
“No.” I held Nekia closely.
“I'm sad, Mommy,” she said and hugged me tighter.
“Mommy is too.” I wiped my eyes.
“Well, once again, I'm Detective Bravestone. I’ll be in touch.” She handed me her card and left.
“This is your fault,” Georgia said in a low tone.
“What?” I looked at her, ready to slap them dentures out her mouth.
“You heard me. If you wouldn’t have left him, he would have been with you and safe. Instead, you chasing old dick, and now look. My boy is dead,” she screamed and walked out, bumping into Nakeem.
“So, you wanted me to stay with a man who impregnated half of Miami, so you could feel better? Now I see why his father ran over your ass,” I said, and she looked hurt, but she was trying to hurt me too.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if you killed him to get her,” Georgia screamed at Nakeem.
“I don’t know what the fuck you talkin’ ’bout, but you need to back up out my face for you join his ass,” Nakeem said with a serious look.
“You need to leave, Georgia. I can't deal with you right now,” I told her.
“Yeah, okay.” She mugged me and left.
“Come on, I got the car out front,” Nakeem said grabbed for me, but I snatched away.
“Did you do this?” I asked, wiping more tears away.
“How you ask me that shit?” he said with his head leaning to the side.
“You told me before the police even knew. How the fuck you know that, Keem?”
I went crazy after he told me Davonte was dead, but I never knew how the fuck he knew.
“Can we leave and talk about this shit?” He said like he was getting impatient.
“No, not until you tell me.” I folded my arms.
He got up close to my ear.
“Come the fuck on, and we gon’ talk when we leave. I ain't finna talk around police, and I see two coming. Let's go.” He said that shit with so much authority I grabbed Nekia’s hand.
“Mommy, Daddy Davonte not coming back?” Nekia asked.
I saw Nakeem tense up when she said that.
“No, baby.” I started crying again.
I looked through the glass window and walked away. The sight of my wedding ring brought tears. I was so used to wearing it that I never took it off. I was quiet on the drive back to Devonte and my home. I didn’t even wanna go in; a lot of his stuff was still in there.
Nekia was sleeping in the back and snoring gently with her book in her lap.
“So, tell me,” I said and looked at him, praying he didn’t do this.
“Wakeem went home, and he was dead in his truck when he got there,” he said, and I looked at him in disbelief.
“You really expect me to believe that bullshit?”
“It’s the truth,” he said as I got out and yanked his back door open to get Nekia. “Where the fuck you goin’?”
“In the house. I don’t know what to believe. I'm confused and scared.” I woke Nekia up then pulled her out and stood her up.
“So, you think I did this shit?” he asked as he got out too.
“What would you think?” I continued walking.
“You still don’t trust me.” He grabbed my arm.
“I don’t know who to trust. My husband was killed, and he happened to be at Wakeem’s house.”
“Yeah, and guess what? Wakeem’s wife was fucking him and got pregnant, so he was probably there for her. My brother found him like the fuck I said. You don’t wanna believe that shit then fuck it, just set up shit for me to see my daughter. I’m done with this shit.” He walked away and got in his truck.
Wakeem’s wife? This shit was too much. Dammit, Davonte.
“Mommy, why you do that? Now, I ain't gon’ have no father again,” Nekia said.
“Nekia Kemia Dodson, your damn mouth too smart sometimes,” I said before unlocking the door and walking in.
“Maybe Daddy Davonte just playin’. He's gonna come in,” Nekia said and ran up the stairs.
I covered my mouth and screamed because she just didn’t understand. With a sigh, I ran upstairs and got her ready for bed then laid her down. After turning on Vampirina for her, I went into the room and lay across the bed.
“God help me,” I said aloud and then looked at my phone as it rang. It was Listy.
“Hello.” I sniffled.
“Hey, I'm on the way there. I'm so sorry, Xia.” She spoke sincerely.
“I just can't,” I cried.
“I know. Did you call Tommie and your dad?” she asked.
“No.”
“You need to get them down there too. You need family,” she said.
“I'll call.” I hung up and called my father.
“Hey, baby girl.” He picked up in a happy ass voice.
“He’s dead, daddy.” My voice cracked.
“Wait, what? Who, baby?”
“Davonte.” I grabbed my stomach and tightly closed my eyes.
“What happened?” he asked unmoved.
“Somebody shot him.” I sniffled.
“Well, this ruins the whole surprise,” he said.
“What surprise?” I asked now more alert.
“We came to see you.”
“You’re here?” I asked and jumped up.
“Yeah. We’re at the hotel. We been here since yesterday,” he replied.
“Well, can ya’ll come over?” I begged.
“Of course, we on the way, come on Oprah.” He hung up.
I waited almost an hour, and then finally the doorbell rang. I looked at the screen, wondering who the hell this bitch was on my porch. I expected it to be my father.
I went and opened the door, and this low budget Khalani stood there with a smirk on her face.
“Can I help you?” I asked.
“Actually, yes, you can help yourself the fuck out my house.” She folded her arms.
“What?” I turned my face up, ready to knock this bitch out.
“You heard me. Tell her, Ms. Georgia,” she said as Georgia walked up.
“What the hell is going on, Georgia?” I asked her.
“I'm Amia, Davonte’s first wife. The one he never legally divorced.” She held out a court order stating she was Davonte’s rightful wife.
“I thought he took care of it, but he didn’t. I'm glad though, now that I see what type of girl you are.” Georgia seethed.
I looked at that bitch in disbelief, like her son wasn’t running around doing what the fuck he wanted.
“I need to get my husband’s jewelry and his—”
I reared back and knocked that bitch the fuck out.
“Xia, what the hell you doin’?” Ms. Georgia yelled as she tried to pick the bitch up.
“I can't believe you walked this bitch up to my door after I lost my husband. Fuck you and this bitch. Try to take anything of mine and watch you take a bullet first.” I slammed the door and stomped upstairs.
Even in death, this lying ass nigga was causing me problems.

“No, sit her ass over there away from me,” I said to the usher when Davonte’s mother got to the funeral.
He looked so unreal in that casket. I was having a hard time processing that, but then Georgia came in with Britt, Davonte’s sister. I didn’t wanna be near her after that shit she tried to pull. That bitch who came to my house was damn sure Davonte’s wife, but lucky for me, my lawyer was smart. He pointed out on the marriage certificate that Davonte didn’t use his legal name. That paused her bullshit, and we’re supposed to go back to court for the shit. I couldn't believe he didn’t tell me he was married before me. I mean, now I really felt stupid. I didn't know my own nigga.
Britt walked up and hugged me.
“I love you. My mother is acting so stupid right now. I'm pissed for you. I know you loved my brother,” she said as she pulled back.
“It's okay.” I nodded and kept it short.
The services started, and I was in a serious haze. Nakeem should have been the last thing on my mind, but there he was, running through my brain. I shouldn’t have accused him like th
