Description

Annabella and the Secret of the Mirrors is a tale set in another world where society is divided by the color of your eyes and the Ministry rules with a promise of Coneyesion - but only if you serve with loyalty, dedication and commitment to their ways. In this world, mirrors are banned because of their dangerous secret properties, but yet the wind brings whispers of their existence and untold powers. Annabella's life seemed normal until she was forced into a journey of self- discovery. On this journey - one that few girls her age could survive - she is thrust into a world of pain and solitude, yet it is her courage and curiosity that will lead Annabella towards an unimaginable future. Along the way, Annabella learns that faith, hope and fear are what can kill you, and yet these emotions also keep you alive. She faces demons she never knew existed, and even some within herself that haven't yet bared their teeth. This is a story that will make you fall in love with a warrior in the making - or maybe a demon slowly being unleashed.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Acknowledgement is an action of expressing or displaying gratitude or appreciation for something.

Therefore, I’m afraid I might fail to serve any justice to this section since every action and interaction throughout my life has led me to write this book.

Having said that, I shall begin now.

Patti Edwards was a Special Education teacher’s aide whose kind and inspirational words, probably unaware of their impact on me, planted a seed that later on evolved into a forest of wisdom.

Carissa, my cousin who stood up for me when I was bullied. She showed me love and that it was ok to be who I am, even though I wasn’t ok with who I was at the time.

Wanda McCune – the woman who adopted me taught me a very valuable lesson: work ethic. If you work at anything hard enough, you will get results.

Tammy Wheat, Elijah, Joshua, Susie, Shanta, Emily, Franz, and Rebekah showed me kindness and friendship, which kept me alive through some really dark times, without even knowing it.

Karen Hamerlwright and Nicole Gill, for their love and guidance as I ventured into a new world and decided to live a true life, not an image of what I thought I should be.

Jesse Marquez, Christopher McVey, and Justin Johnson aka Alyssa Edwards, you are all and will always be my family!

The Bettencourt - Swanson family, I have no words to express the power and inspiration your family has not only showed me but also included me.

Poor Mama, aka Mary Jones Hilton, what can I say about a woman who is so wonderful except for that I love you.

Darren Bettencourt, a man I met when I first moved to LA. He taught me that I could dream, he taught me what it was like to love, and he showed me a life I never knew existed. Without him I would not be the person I am today, I thank him for every experience that we shared and I am looking forward to the ones that are still to come.

Christopher Grant, my friend and amazing artist who worked so hard to make this cover what it is, thank you!

Marza, you took my Texan special education writing skills and made it to where people can read and understand my story, thank you!

Suzan you are an inspiration to me.

Jilda you have a light in you that can never be put out.

Enrique Godoy Ynzenga, my partner in crime, my best friend and business partner at Skinny Executives. You drive me crazier than anyone, which means that we are truly family! You are the only person who I trust with everything and you are my number one supporter in my writing! I thank you and love you. I am looking forward to our future adventures together!

THE GOLDEN TEMPLE
My eyes were closed tightly as I awoke, and I felt the sun trying to peep in. Suddenly, I heard Brianne calling my name.
“Annabella, Annabella! Annabella! You must wake up. We are going to be late to the Monastery.”
I hadn’t slept well. The night before, I had dreamt of a house on fire; a strange dream that haunted me, even in the morning light.
Although I was tired, I knew Brianne was right. As I sat up to greet her in my room, she stared at me with her beautiful, crystal-blue eyes. Her hair was tied neatly in a perfect bun and she wore a beautiful, peach dress that billowed to the floor. She was considered Pure, and I thought no less of her. Brianne was my oldest and only sister. She was also my best friend.
I arose from the bed, stretching my arms out. Brianne began to fashion my hair in a tight bun, as was customary for all the women.
“I have a surprise for you,” Brianne said.
I smiled widely as she pointed to a box in the corner of the room. “Who is it from? Is it for me?”
She answered, “It’s from me, silly. And yes, for you! It’s for Temple. I want to show the Ministry that you are Pure and hopefully get you on the list for Coneyesion.”
I smiled as enormously as I could. I had always dreamt of this moment. People with blue eyes are Purer. They have many more advantages than people with brown eyes. Coneyesion is how the Ministerions change brown eyes to blue, and since I have one blue eye and one brown eye, I imagined it would be easy!
I ran to the box and opened it to discover a beautiful yellow dress with white lace on the bottom.
I looked at Brianne and asked, “Am I allowed to wear this?”
She nodded her head and said, “Of course you can! Wear it as a gift to honor me and at the same time show off your beauty!”
She would always tell me that she got both blue eyes, but I got all of the beauty.
I put the dress on as quickly as I could, asking, “How do I look?”
She simply smiled. “You look Pure!”
She always made me feel special, even though I was considered a commoner.
We went straight to the kitchen. There stood Mother preparing Brianne’s breakfast while Father read the town’s newspaper in silence. The kitchen was a small room, and the only light came through a small window over the table. Two small blue curtains were tied on either side with white lace to keep them open.
Brianne sat down first, as always, and then invited the rest of us to join her. If you were Pure, you were privileged and you got to eat first. If there were no other Pure people around, you could pick an audience, which was us. We all ate together.
My mother examined me in my new dress. She seemed to be hiding her feelings. Was she pleased? Or was she mad? I really couldn’t tell. But I felt amazing wearing it.
When Brianne began to speak, everyone fell silent. “Today, I have given Annabella one of my old dresses to honor me. I want her to join me at the Golden Temple.”
I choked for a minute. I was so excited about the beautiful dress that I hadn’t given a thought to anything else . I had never been to the Golden Temple. It was only for the Pures, I thought. I always went to the Ministry of Guidance, where they teach and train you to be Pure. They assign you a job when you are 16 and if you do well, you might have a chance of getting Coneyesion!
My mom asked to speak and said, “How can this be?”
My dad only looked at Brianne; he never spoke or looked at me. When he finally did, he looked disappointed, and then angry, as if I had done something wrong.
Brianne said, “This is my decision and this is what will be. I am allowed a guest on this special occasion and Annabella will be my guest. This is my word, and you are to support it!” I gazed up and saw her smiling at me.
I’m not sure whether my mother and father were irritated because I had been chosen over them, or because this meant that I was one step closer to receiving Coneyesion. Both of my parents had brown eyes and the only reason we were even allowed to live in the city was because of Brianne. The city was only for Pure people and their immediate family. Once a Pure turned 16 years old, he or she was allowed to choose a proper duty. The Pure then had the choice to banish his or her family either to the outskirts – where the other Browns lived – or to allow them to continue as an audience amongst the Pure. For this reason, my parents never really argued with Brianne. They knew they needed to appease her in order to stay within the city. I myself had never left the vicinity but I had heard it was not safe outside the city walls.
After we finished eating, my parents excused themselves and departed for the Brown Temple. Brianne took my hand and touched my face tenderly.
“Don’t be nervous,” she said, giving me one last smile. She grabbed my hand and we walked up the beautiful boulevard to the Golden Temple. The streets in the city were immaculate and the gardens followed suit. Every home was a model of exquisite perfection. The Browns were in charge of maintaining, cleaning, and looking after every detail of the city, while the Pures ran the shops, wrote for the town’s newspaper, and studied to become Ministerions. The Ministerions were the teachers of the Ministry, the ones who were taught how to use Coneyesion. They were the top- ranked members of our society. Brianne wanted to become a Ministerion so she could perform Coneyesion on me. I dreamt of becoming Pure so I could one day run a flower shop, a bakery, or maybe just have my own children and help my sister with her duties. I deeply hoped my children would be born Pure.
Many thoughts were running through my head. I considered t
