To my daughter, Suzanne Jane Spencer
A quicksilver smile, then he was gone, yet her fingertips still tingled minutes after his hand had left hers. Helen glowed! What a wonderful evening it had been! Her eyes misted in reverie. How she loved the way one corner of his mouth lifted when he was amused! She breathed deeply. Never had she felt so thrillingly alive!
Curiously, though, there was no feeling of guilt. That had disappeared after the first couple of meetings. Instead, everything was transcended by a soaring feeling of ecstasy. She closed her eyes, savouring afresh the oneness of the last few hours; the gentleness – the passion – the feeling of being totally desired by this fascinating man.
But the excuse? What was to be the excuse this time? She must not become blasé and careless about these excuses. One of these days Henry might become suspicious! Incredibly dull he might be, but stupid he was not! Underneath that mask of banality, something lurked in Henry which Helen did not quite understand, but which at times, left her feeling slightly uneasy. She shrugged her shoulders. Why worry! Life had become exciting and she was going to enjoy it to the full!
