CHAPTER ONE
IN THE BEGINNING
C rickets and locusts chirped in the green bushes and grass, as I sat on the park bench outside the spacious apartment building on a lazy, cool, overcast late autumn day. The forecast had warned of rain, but I did not expect any before noon as I sat waiting on the mail carrier to deliver a package I was expecting. Leaves were still falling from the trees that had changed color. I prayed for my daughters.
I noticed that the birds pleasantly sounded in the trees. A Robin chirped in the distance, and a Sparrow in a tree close by made its presence known to the other Sparrows in the neighborhood.
I suddenly became aware of God’s presence with me, and I stopped to thank Him for His presence, and for that Sabbath, the last Saturday in October. I noticed the beauty of His nature in the world around me, and I worshiped Him for His goodness and beauty, and for His creation, including the orchestra music of the birds and the insects in quadraphonic surround sound. God is such an Artist.
The clouds began to brake up, and the sun came out as a wasp hovered over the top of a bush, and the mail man arrived. The package did not arrive, but I got a letter from a friend. A Blue Jay sang on the other side of the attractive apartment complex village.
I re-entered the cool building and casually walked to my apartment on the quiet carpeted floor of the hallway, white ceiling fans rotating lazily in the air up and down the hallway, and lay the letter on the desk. In the fingers of my mind, I was diligently working on my next book which I had been working on writing for awhile. The ending was clear, but I was remembering what had brought me to that point. I had experienced being exposed to acceptance, reality, and truth, and had slowly recovered from mental illness; illness that had left me alienated and stigmatized for a time. I had gradually moved from being judged and rejected, to developing relationships based on honesty and trust.
Solomon wrote: Hope deferred makes the heart sick. I was looking forward to being with my daughter again. Yet, I could not blame others, not even my daughter Molokai, for the misfortune and rejection of my mental illness; I had actually even come to dislike myself for the illness I had suffered from. Still I was grateful for God having healed me, and for having used it to give me a new life and a new identity- an identity with a purpose which no one knew but me and my Maker. God is such a blessing; He is so generous, and He is faithful to keep His promises. Yet, how would this all end?
Some scoff at a purpose driven life, but my revealed purpose, revealed to me by my Creator, drove me to accomplish that which I was destined to achieve. I felt a sense of urgency at the seriousness of the task at hand, as well as at the shortness of the time left- if I was to be a successful servant. Yet, I had no doubt about it being a successful mission.
Jesus and His Father, through His Spirit and His Word, had assured me that I would be successful. That spurred me on, even in times when there seemed to be little progress. I realized that, if I had great success too fast, that I might not do my best. Indeed, I might fail because of becoming proud instead of being humble, living in pride and self-sufficiency, instead of practicing humility. I needed wisdom to succeed. Wisdom is with the humble. I remembered that from reading it in the Proverbs of King Solomon; a very wise man.
Back in my apartment, I hung my key on the door lock so that I would not forget it the next time I left home. I did not need the air conditioner on, but the room was rather stuffy. Realizing uneasily that I had forgotten to take my cell phone with me, I picked it up and checked to see if I had had any calls while I was out. There had not been any calls. I put the cell phone in the pocket of my sweat pants and lay the letter on the desk for later. I collected my voice recorder and my script to time my talk, turned on the fan, and sat down to work on practicing my present television program.
I began, “‘Signs At the End.’ God set out to humble His people, the Jews of Israel,...’”. I continued to time the talk as I turned page after page of the notebook. At the end, I checked the voice recorder to see how long it had taken. It had taken exactly twenty nine minutes. That was great. Now, just if the timing would be consistent when I was to record it on the television camera. I sat up the equipment to record. I prayed expectantly for God to make it a success, and then recorded the program.
The recording session over, I checked the time. It had taken less than twenty nine minutes, which I was delighted to see; there would be space for the credits left.
I put the equipment away, and sat down at the keyboard to practice playing “Amazing Grace.” I remembered that it is written: “Praise the Lord from the earth...both young men and maidens; old men, and children....” I began to sing as I played “Amazing Grace.” Gratitude filled my heart.
After I was through, I stood up and went to study Spanish. I remembered the verse that reads: “The wise in heart shall be called Prudent: and the sweetness of the lips increaseth learning. The heart of the wise teacheth his mouth, and addeth learning to his lips.” I felt confidence in my ability to learn.
When I finished, I turned to study other subjects. I remembered that it was written: “...when the wise is instructed, he receiveth knowledge.” I prayed, “Lord help me to gain the instruction of wisdom.” I remembered that it was written: “The fear of the Lord is the in
