INSPIRING WORDS
“Life is 10 percent what you make it, and 90 percent how you take it.”
- Irving Berlin
CHAPTER 1

The light blue sky was darkening. Night started to melt slowly into it. Misty pinks and purples started to appear in swirls of delicious color. It was beautiful. It was something that I would have spent more time appreciating, if it wasn’t for what was going on around me.
“Are you seriously going to risk your reputation over her?” Nick asked Max venomously. “What do you think people will say when they find out?”
“There’s nothing to find out,” Max said calmly. The anger and rage that was crashing across Nick’s face could not be found in Max. He was taking the situation in his stride. He was dealing with Nick’s anger in a way that was only infuriating Nick more. “Whatever has happened or might happen between myself and Dannie is nobody’s business.”
“That doesn’t mean they won’t talk,” Nick said.
Max sighed and gave Nick a pitying look. “School is over in a few short months. We’re applying for jobs and looking into the future. What makes you think that I care about what anybody here has to say? We’ll be gone and they’ll be gone. I know that you’re pissed because you’ve lost the best damn girl you’re ever going to get, but honestly, you were way out of your league. This was going to happen at some point, and you’re blind if you can’t see that.”
“You think I care about her?” Nick glanced over at me with a deep, thick hatred that made it hard to breathe. “You think I give a crap about that little skank?”
“Watch what you’re saying,” Max warned, his lips pulling back revealing his perfect white teeth. A low, growl escaped his lips. His glare sharpened. The cool, laid back aura he’d been wearing was gone. Nick had stepped over the line and Max was making sure that he knew that.
“Oh,” Nick said dryly. His eyes glazed over with a bored, overly confident look. “Look at how defensive you are over her.” He wasn’t backing down from Max’s warning. He was standing his ground.
“I think you should probably go.” Max’s words were cold. They were so cold that the temperature around us seemed to drop.
“Or what?” Nick challenged him.
I caught Max’s movement out of the corner of my eye. It started as just a twitch of his hand. I knew, without really knowing, what he was going to do. I couldn’t just stand there. I couldn’t just watch, as things spiralled out of control.
“No,” I yelled, pushing myself quickly forward so that I could stand between them. But it was already too late. Max’s hand had already been set into motion. His eyes filled with shock as he realized that I was suddenly in the way, and then it happened.
Hot, thunderous pain struck across my jawline. A deafening crunch filled my ears. It was gross. It was like bones grating together. The impact stopped, but the pain didn’t. In fact, it was getting worse. Every beat of my heart seemed to bring a new wave of tremor-inducing pain.
“Dannie,” Nick’s worried voice broke through my pain, but only just. “Dannie, I am so sorry.”
He wrapped his arms around me. I stood perfectly still in shock. My hand was holding the side of my face, and it felt strangely bulgy and soft.
