Description

Akasha is a precocious young girl with dreams of motherhood. She lives in a fantastical world where most of the oceans circulate in the aquamarine sky waters. Before she was born, the Helios, a tribe of angels from the sun, came to Earth to deliver the Surge, the next step in the evolution of an embryonic human race. Instead they spawned a race of hybrids and infected humanity with a hybrid seed.Horque manifests on Earth with another tribe of angels, the Solarii, to rescue the genetic mix-up and release the Surge.Akasha embarks on a journey from maiden to mother and from apprentice to priestess then has a premonition that a great flood is imminent. All three races - humans, hybrids and Solarii-face extinction. With their world in crisis, Akasha and Horque meet, and a sublime love flashes between them. Is this a cause of hope for humanity and the Solarii? Or will the hybrids destroy them both? Will anyone survive the killing waters of the coming apocalypse?

Justin Newland is an author of historical fantasy and secret history thrillers – that’s history with a supernatural twist. His historical novels feature known events and real people from history which are re-told and examined through the lens of the supernatural.
His novels speculate on the human condition and explore the fundamental questions of our existence. As a species, as Homo sapiens sapiens – that’s man the twice-wise – how are we doing so far? Where is mankind’s spiritual home? What does it look or feel like? Would we recognise it if we saw it?
Undeterred by the award of a Doctorate in Mathematics from Imperial College, London, he found his way to the creative keyboard and conceived his debut novel, The Genes of Isis (Matador, 2018), an epic fantasy set under Ancient Egyptian skies. Next came the supernatural thriller, The Old Dragon’s Head (Matador, 2018), which is set in Ming Dynasty China. His third novel, The Coronation (Matador, 2019), speculates on the genesis of the most important event of the modern world – the Industrial Revolution. His latest novel, The Abdication (Matador, 2021), is a supernatural thriller in which a young woman confronts her faith in a higher purpose, and what it means to abdicate that faith.
His stories add a touch of the supernatural to history and deal with the themes of war, religion, evolution and the human’s place in the universe.
He was born three days before the end of 1953 and lives with his partner in plain sight of the Mendip Hills in Somerset, England.

Saying of the Ancients

It came to pass that the Source gave authority to Semjaza to rule over the angels of the sun, the children of heaven, who were called the Helios. And He entrusted them to deliver the Surge, the next step in the evolution of the children of men.
On Mount Hermon did the Helios descend to Earth with their assistants, the Solarii, only to find the children of men tardy in their development and wholly unprepared for the great boon of the Surge. The angels tarried in the astral light and when they could tarry no longer, the Helios sought to deliver the Surge lest it pass its time of flowering. So the Helios passed through the veil and appeared in their astral guise, the winged hornet. They covered the children of men in a cloak of golden astral pollen and stung the daughters of men, revealing to them untimely knowledge.
And the women bore monstrous hybrids, fathered by fallen angels, mothered by fair maidens, yet cursed with the rude nature of the creatures of the forest. All men and women were blighted by the hybrid seed and could only give birth to hybrids. For want of a miracle, the children of men would grow old, wither, and die, all because of the Helios.
The Solarii smote the Helios, covered their faces with darkness, and bound them for eternity beneath the valleys of the Earth. In Dudael did the Solarii make an opening in the desert and cast the hybrids into it and separated them from the children of men by invisible shields tethered with the fineness of the astral.

Prologue
Sometimes when I sit alone and the night draws in like a curtain of fine black soot, my skin becomes ultra-sensitive. I can feel the slight vibrations of a shadow, or detect a passing wraith vainly seeking its way home. Each nerve fibre develops its own echo, so as the feeling travels from my fingertips, through the palm, along the forearm, then flashes through the scapula, it culminates in a resounding crescendo in the caverns of my soul.
Stillness ushers in this state, a strange quiescence that comes from afar. It is as if I were afloat in the midst of a great galaxy, where the sound of the millions of years hums in the inner chambers of my mind like a gentle but mysterious symphony.
When I touch its panorama, I see with my own eyes, but in a way subtly different to normal vision. I watch with other eyes. Other eyes – how is that possible? There is only me, isn’t there? But there is something else – an entity – that sees through my eyes, that sees what I see. How can this be? That I can see? That the other can be? Yet I tell you it is so.
