About the Author
PREFACE
Emil Cressida watched as his city burned, as the smoke rose and darkened the sky. Out of habit, he reached down to rest his hand on his grizzly bear’s head, Nuka stood tall enough Emil didn’t have to reach far. This would be the last time he ever had this comfort from his protector.
He sighed heavily.
“Emil,” Adelaide said from behind him, “it’s time. They’re here.”
“Of course, it is,” he said as he turned to his wife. “Olliver, Leah, please, come in.”
“Your majesty,” Olliver said bowing deeply, his face as hard as stone, “the lieutenant said it was urgent?”
“Olliver,” Emil said, a deep sadness in his voice, “we have known each other for a long time,” which was why Emil was not very pleased with the words he was about to say, “You and Leah are the only people left that can take my oldest and her twin out of the city. Take them to the border village my mother grew up in, you’ll find Camielle and my mother there, waiting for you. When she is ready, they will help her call upon the treaty of the United Kingdoms so that she can get her kingdom back.”
“Of course, my King,” Olliver said with a nod, the greed in his eyes made Emil nervous, this was not something he truly wanted to do, he did not trust the hard-faced captain of his guard.
“Wouldn’t it be better for me and Olliver to stay here in yours and Adelaide’s place?” Leah, Olliver’s young wife asked as she hugged her still-growing bump.
“No,” Emil said sadly, “Addy and I will be the bait while you take the twins and get out. If we’re not here when Julius takes the castle, he’ll pursue us, and we’ll never make it out.”
“Not to mention we would never ask that of you in your condition,” Adelaide said as she smiled kindly at Leah.
“But Emil,” Leah said, her eyes bright with fear, “they will likely kill you when they breach the castle.”
“It’s more than likely,” Emil replied with a grave nod.
“Let Olliver and I be the bait, your majesty,” Leah tried again. Her heart was bigger than most people Emil had met. Even after having only been here a few months, she was loyal to them, loved them even. Enough so that even in her condition she would give her life for them.
Olliver did not deserve a woman like her, he was too cruel to her gentle-hearted spirit.
There was a small part of Emil that wished he could slip out and leave Olliver as bait, a small selfish part of him that wanted to see his babies grow up. But Julius was after Emil, not Olliver, and Emil would never be so cowardly as to leave his people to suffer while he fled.
He did not trust Olliver, Leah yes but Olliver… Olliver had always made Emil edgy despite his new title of captain of the guard due to the sudden and tragic death of Shamar, his trusted captain, and most loyal friend. Now he was stuck with Olliver, whose hunger for power that Emil had seen in him when they had been children had not left him. He had hoped Shane or even Camielle or her youngest daughter would make it back through the catacombs to take them, but they had not, and they no longer had time to wait for them as they had originally planned.
Julius had betrayed him in the worst way possible and Emil was left scrambling to protect his family.
“Leah, please, make sure they are safe,” Adelaide said tears flowing down her face as she touched their twins’ sleeping heads in the small bassinet the twins often shared in his office while he worked.
“Of course, my Queen,” Leah replied nodding her head. They hadn’t known Leah long, but she was an honorable young woman. Why she had decided to marry Olliver, even carrying his child, Emil would never understand. She had more courage than Emil did.
“If you can’t find my mother, take them to Moses, Camielle will look for you there,” Emil said quietly to Olliver as their wives embraced, “She will let him help her raise them, Thea will need his help to become a good queen. When they are with them, take Leah back to Arctic and be happy. That is my last order to you Olliver, as your King.”
Olliver said nothing he simply nodded, something told Emil giving his babies over to Olliver was a mistake. But it was too late now to change plans. His heir and her brother had to get out of Autumn and to some place safe for their own good, Olliver Mieres was his last hope.
Emil approached the bassinet by the edge of his desk holding his sleeping children.
“My beautiful girl,” he cooed down at his sleeping one-and-a-half-year-old daughter, “you will be an amazing queen one day.”
Carefully he took an old golden necklace with the even older golden amulet of Autumn on it, from around his neck, and gently placed it around hers.
Then he looked at his son, sleeping next to his sister as he so often did, holding her arm even in their sleep, already her protector.
“Take care of her my son,” Emil whispered as he ran his thumb lightly along his son’s soft pudgy cheek, “she will need you as more than just a brother. You must be her protector, her consultant, her friend. When everyone else fails her, you must not.”
Daigo and Luna, the twin’s protectors, looked at him with worried eyes as they both stood close to the bassinet. They were small, still growing into the mighty forms they would surely have one day. But they were still fierce, still ready to defend their wards if the need arose.
“Don’t worry young ones, Nuka and Rue will be going with you,” Emil said. It was the only protection he could offer his children from the grave.
“Don’t let him hurt them,” Emil said softly to Nuka, his bear protector, as he knelt before the grizzly and rubbed the sides of his face out of comfort, “I see the greed in his eyes for her power. Keep him away from her, don’t let him stay when you reach my mother.”
His bear stared at him and nodded. His dear friend and partner, Emil knew he would not fail them even when he could not be there for them himself.
“Your majesty! Your majesty!” a soldier said bursting into the room. “they’ve broken through the castle walls!”
“Olliver, you need to leave, now!” Emil said as he jumped to his feet, “go through the catacombs that take you to my sister’s estate. She has horses waiting for you.”

King Emil looked over his burning city one last time, then, with his wife, he turned to the door as the Ash soldiers broke through.
“Oh Emil,” a voice that used to belong to a friend said, “you were a fool not to join me. And then you tried to stand against me! Ha! Now you will watch your family die. Already I have taken your youngest twins from you.”
Adelaide cried out and grabbed Emil’s arm. Anger flooded through Emil’s chest at the same time a cold sinking sadness did. His precious babies had been stolen from him too early and he had been powerless to stop it.
“It is only a matter of time before I find your heir and her brother and kill them too. Soon Autumn will have no king and no heir and the kingdom will slowly cease to exist. Too bad you won’t be around to protect them. Ah well,” Julius Ruena said as he drew his sword, “Believe me when I say I don’t take pleasure in killing you Emil, we were friends once.”
