Description

Hugo is the Latinized form of the name Hugh and was used in the Middle Ages as the official written form. Hugh has Frankish (Germanic) roots and comes from the Old French “Hughes” derived from “hug,” meaning ‘heart, mind, spirit.’ The aristocracy of medieval France adopted Hugh/Hugo, no doubt due to the name’s favorable meaning, i.e., an intelligent person or one who is bright in heart, mind, and spirit. My uncle Heinz liked the name and his first car, a 1945 Dodge that carried the family all over California, from Crystal Lake in the San Bernardino Mountains to Huntington Beach, and all on bald tires, Hugo 1. I am not sure how intelligent our escapades were, but the brightness in heart, mind, and spirit went a long way. This story’s purpose is a joyride of possibilities that run through my mind as I recall the carefree days in Hugo 1.

Disclaimer
All of the family members generally speak to each other telepathically unless a none telepathic person is present. That is the general rule anyway as not to be rude. However, that rule is not written in stone. Nevertheless, if they are talking and their lips are not moving, they are speaking telepathically to each other. Furthermore, eavesdropping is common. Therefore someone on Crystal may answer you while you are on Eaton via the links through the doorway system.

Chapter 1
X46
The voyage begins with X46, the captain’s holographic avatar appearing as if reviewing the ship’s personnel’s manifest. The ship, a galaxy-class starship named HUGO1. Sitting in the space dock receiving supplies of fresh foods for its maiden voyage. The captain of HUGO1, a 1001 series cybernetic computer, with a telepathic interface to its biological crew. The computer is housed in a multi-layered impenetrable vault in the ship’s center, which even neutrinos could not reach or penetrate. The cooling system of the mainframe is an integral part of the vault’s layered support system. A porous matrix of carbon fiber layer with liquid mercury as the heat transfer carrier. This housing is covered with layers of titanium, lead, and Gold in varying thicknesses. The heat coming from the cooling coils warms 20% of the ship. Maintenance of the computer is minimal at best. It only requires periodic upgrades, which for the most part, are handled internally by the computer itself.
He, the computer, is an egocentric individual with thousands of years of experience as a captain. The builders of HUGO1, taking this egocentrism of the captain in mind. Link him cybernetically to the navigator. She thinks of herself as female, and a caring, understanding individual, a 1012 series cybernetic computer with a telepathic interface to its biological crew and personnel. She is his partner on the ship. The navigator’s avatar is a flirtatious female with a friendly disposition that keeps the crew and personnel happy and working for the overall function of HUGO1.
These Biologicals can be a real pain; the more intelligent they become, the more argumentative they are. Nevertheless, do not seem to want to understand that I am the captain of this ship. Moreover, what I say goes. Your scientists in that exploration team have more requests than I can possibly handle. Please keep them out of my circuits.
I will take care of the non-crew personal from now on.
Spacedock to DOCS (Direct Operational Control System): “Final inspection team from oversight committee is ready to come aboard Hugo.”
DOCS: “Permission granted; X46 will stand by for the inspection. DOCS out.” – “DOCS to Navigator: “Please make the inspection team your priority.”
As the shuttle with the inspection team approaches the starship, they see the elongated moon shape, with the engine pods extended, hanging motionless over the planet below. One of the flight crew informs the inspection team that the engine pods, now extended, are typically stored in the ship when not in use to give the ship a stealth moon-like appearance for other world exploration.
The two in the forward seats, inspector Jay and Rex of the twenty-five inspectors, were discussing the use of DOCS as captain. They were commenting on how these machines had been around for thousands of years. The last time I can remember one being upgraded 15,010, and that was five thousand years ago. Once they become sentient, they do not progress much after that. You can add more memory and logic circuitry and make them telepathic, but higher cognition is impossible. They make excellent ship captains, but some are so into themselves, they are hard to work with. This one, we paired with a newer model with female-gendered thought patterns to tone him down.
Rex: “Congratulations are in order to whoever thought of pairing these sentient machines.”
Jay: “Not much thought involved there; biologicals been doing it for 500,000 years. The telepathic enhancement, we believe, has brought the most significant uplift to our culture.”
Rex: “I am not so sure about that; it takes twenty years to teach an adolescent that broadcasting every hiccup and climax all over the planet construes bad manners. I have to wear a telepathic suppressor just to have a private thought or a good night’s sleep. I think that every adolescent under twenty-five years of age should be required to wear a suppressor or, at least, until they can show some control. The only place I can get any peace and quiet is out here in space. The other day I was at home for the night; I woke in the morning thinking I was in an orgy. The telepathic sexual babble was unbelievable. I do not know how you handle it without going crazy.”
Jay: “We are docking. Have you ever talked with
