Jealous Earth
The inn was perfect. It seemed to be everything that an English country pub should be, lop-sided with Tudor beams and ivy clinging confidently to the walls. All the windows were lit up with a warm, pinkish glow, inviting passers-by to hurry inside, out of the cold, damp air.
Jilly Acton switched off her engine and sighed with relief. She’d been twisting and winding along narrow country lanes for ages, straining her eyes to see anything through the horrible rainy drizzle. She was beginning to feel tired with a bit of a headache, and quite worried when she finally spotted the distant lights of the pub, twinkling through the mist.
She opened the wooden front door and was immediately enveloped in a welcoming warmth. A huge log fire crackled and spat in an old inglenook fireplace, horse brasses covered all the beams, and pictures of hunting scenes hung on the walls.
