Description

All is peaceful in the Veil, which is usually when everything falls apart...

Queen Aurora of the Court of Light and King Jarvok of the Court of Dark have fallen in love despite all odds. A relationship of political convenience has turned into something real and tangible for the two monarchs. After centuries of conflict and mistrust, the two Courts are about to unite as one: the Court of the Fae. But not every Fae is happy about the impending union.

Queen Aurora's most trusted advisors have never lost touch with their old Angelic ways. These bishops still believe that Virtues and Power Angels were never meant to mix. According to them, Queen Aurora is no longer suitable to rule. As they mount a complex coup d'état to grasp the throne, a new threat to the monarchy makes their move.

Will the entire foundation of peace crumble with one last act of betrayal? Or will the bond between Court of Light and Dark prevail in the face of danger?

Prologue

A h, the Veil. The Court of Light, to be precise. I have been observing the Fae for so very long now. They are no threat to me; I find them amusing. Especially that last squabble Jarvok and Aurora had. I mean, a vapor dragon. I am still fanboying over that one. Well don e, Jarvok!
I watched this group of cast-offs rebuild themselves after the Creator locked them out of the Shining Kingdom so long ago. They earned my respect at first—rebuilding and redefining who they were. That is until I realized they did all this not to spite their almighty, but despite him. They can act like such s impletons.
Aurora has forgiven and evolved—good for her. It seems the queen has found common ground with the Dark Fae king. Yes, they are in love… Could you just die! It’s so sweet. Excuse me while I grab my airsickness bag. Yet, she continues to ignore the signs that all is not well in the Veil. Her bishops grow distant but, she still trusts them. Sure, when has trusting a band of scheming men ever not worked out for a woman in power?
The Fae are still so concerned with their daddy. They don’t see how their issues sully everything they do. Even now when they have peace after a long, bloody war. They should be celebrating, but instead of being happy, they are stuck in their feelings. The bishops are upset with their queen and her choice to welcome the Dark Fae into the fold. Like the bishops, some Light Fae are holding fast to their old Virtue beliefs sowing seeds of discord. Worrying about what dear ol’ dad would think—it make s me sick.
The Fae born of the Earth aren’t much better; pitiful, actually. They do not know what suffering is. They prick their fingers on a thorn bush and cry. Pockets of these younger Fae feel the war was not theirs to win or lose. They can’t grasp the bigger picture but will jump onto a cause if their friends tel l them to.
The older, bitter Fae are leading the younger ones, whipping them up into a frenzy, causing a rebellion. The insurgents are becoming emboldened as they listen to propaganda about how their beloved queen is defaming the sacrifices of the fallen Fae who gave their light for the war. A war those Earthborn Fae have no connection to. But fear is a motivator. If the queen lies with the king, she may put the Dark Fae above the Light Fae. It’s all a manipulation. S impletons.
Do I care? No, I do not. While these Fae prance about, neglecting the humans who still worship them as their pantheon of gods and goddesses, droughts are more prevalent, crops are ruined, and illnesses run rampant. Soon the old religion will pass on—making it easier for me to take center stage, where I belong.
It’s the usual trope: one conversation, and much of this could have been avoided. Queen Aurora should have told King Jarvok about the mounting rebellion their unification was causing. But she knows the Dark Fae king rules with a Kyanite fist. He would put a swift end to the tension bubbling under the surface. And rightfully so. I always appreciated his take-no-prisoners attitude, even when he was a Power Brigade Angel. Aurora believes she can handle this on her own, or perhaps she naively hopes it will simply work itself out. I think she doesn’t trust her lover as much as she says she does, for deep down she knows he is the bet ter ruler.
They are all pawns in this game, and I should know; I am the one playing across from the Creator. I have been waiting to see how I can use them to my advantage, and my persistence is about to pay off. If patience is a virtue, then knowledge is power. I have both. Let’s see how our little lovebirds are doing. Something tells me there is a snake among them, and no, it ’s not me.

Ch apter One:
A Change Will Do Who Good?

K ing Jarvok, leader of the Dark Fae, called the meeting of the High Council Guard into session. His two lieutenants, Zion and Asa, stood tall and silent at his side, ready to serve.
“I have asked you all here today to inform you of the decisions I have made regarding the blending of our court with the Light Fae. I am due to deliver details of my reorganization of the Court of Dark to Queen Aurora by the full moon. Therefore, I wanted you to be aware of the changes that will befall us once the unification ceremony tak es place.”
The members of the High Council Guard had very different reactions to the king’s declaration. Yagora and Pria exchanged uneasy glances. Azrael and Ezekiel leaned forward, hanging on their king’s every word. Jonah’s head drooped forward, his eyes half closed and shot up just before his chin hit his chest. Zion and Asa stayed put at the head of the obsidian crystal table. Jar vok paced.
Los, a small dragon with the rare ability to blend into his surroundings like a chameleon, was perched at the observation window, trying to stay out of the way. His pink tongue lolled out of his mouth as it always did. His large, dark eyes focused on the Dark Fae king as he methodically paced. The dragon was aware of the gravity of the situation.
Holly, a black mink and Lady Zarya’s Familiar, was snuggled around the neck of the Court of Dark’s Oracle. The two were present to lend any support should their king need it. Dragor, King Jarvok’s dragon companion and leader of the Draconia
