I would like to thank:
My Dad (Rajendra Prasad), for his support and faith on me, I wasn’t sure he believed in me.
My Mom (Neelam Sonkar), for her guidance and support. When I was nervous she boosted my confidence by telling that ‘Victory may or may not be yours but you’ll learn a lot… you are the person I look up to’.
Antara Aggarwal, for helping me editing in earlier stage of the book.
My friends- Shreya, Jyothsna and Arivudainangai, who supported me always.

“T here was a forest around me. The darkness was almost visible. It was like I could feel a pang of all of its sadness. Through the dense trees came this ray of light, and as the leaves separated, emerged a man. All I remember after that is seeing a red shot of light, and the next moment the words “MATAR TORTUOSO” flew out of my mouth”, Arya said as she wiped the perspiration off her brow.
“And then?” asked Shreya.
“And then? He was dead.” Arya replied.
“Dead? What could this possibly mean?” Shreya exclaimed.
Arya gulped. “So I googled it. It’s Spanish for torturous killing.” Her eyes widened. “I feel so miserable thinking about it. In the dream, I felt like this seething venomous snake going in for the kill! These dreams are starting to unnerve me, Shreya.”
She wanted to vent out further, but looking at her own fear reflecting in Shreya’s eyes, she decided to remain quiet. Shreya nods.
“I know Arya. But this is probably just your subconscious playing tricks on you. You’ll get over it, I’m sure. So, shall we head to class?”
Glad for the intervention, she agreed, “Yeah, let’s hurry!”
The next week saw her same old routine which started with the customary.

“Arya! Homework first. Can you keep your novels aside for once?” which was the very scene unfolding.
“But Ma, you know I can’t go on a day without them. I promise, my scores won’t go down this time.”
“They better not,” said Ma, “Because I won’t get your father to sign on your progress report the next time.”
Groaning, she went to her room and worked on number problems like her darling mum wanted her to.
Aditi was in a deep thought when Sameer returned from the office.
“What’s wrong with you?”
She came out of her trance.
“Nothing I am just tensed about Arya. She is too much into fantasy and I am scared for her now. She always talks about these dreams of hers. And I don’t feel like it’s normal anymore. She has been dreaming about the same dream for a couple of months now. I don’t feel okay about this.”
“It has been almost 16 years now. And it was nothing that you are panicking for. I have told you a lot many times, it’s just your mind. You don’t even remember anything from that night.” Sameer reassured her.
Aditi’s fear was palpable to Sameer, and he decided not to stretch the topic any further. He calmed her down by telling her that it was normal to be into fiction in Arya’s age. He distracted her by asking her about her day and asked for a cup of coffee after the tiring day he had.
Next day at school, Arya and Shreya discussed about Arya’s dream again during lunch. Arya brought it up by telling Shreya that finally, she had a different dream. Shreya asked her how it was different.
“I was in a different place,” replied Arya.
“What kind of a place?”
“I don’t know. It felt like a place to learn. It seemed like a school but it was different from other schools. It looked ancient. The children’s uniforms, way different from what we wear.”
Shreya was a little exhausted of listening to Arya’s dreams. So, she replied her in a ruthless manner so that Arya would stop fretting so much about her dreams and stop talking about them.
“I guess your mom is right Arya, you should just stop reading fantasy books. It’s playing a major role in your dreams. They are the reason for these kinds of dreams. Look, I know one thing for sure that our subconscious mind plays a major role in our dreams, and you read lots of fiction. That’s just why you see these dreams. Stop reading them, otherwise they will always disturb you. You will be able to focus more on your studies.”
Shreya’s response enraged Arya. She screamed at Shreya. She told her that it was not because of the books or her subconscious mind. It was different and she wouldn’t understand, because it didn’t happen with her. Shreya tried to apologize because she knew she was wrong and she never meant it. Without another word, Arya just left and she headed towards the class. Shreya felt terrible because she knew that she was the only person Arya was so comfortable with talking to about her problem. This might make Arya feel that Shreya was just as judgmental. Shreya also heads toward the class.
Arya’s birthday was in a week. Aditi and Sameer were planning a surprise birthday party for her. They sat reminiscing about her birth and how 16 years had already gone by. For them, Arya was their sunshine. Aditi couldn’t even imagine a day without Arya. They had planned to keep her birthday party on Arya’s favorite theme. Aditi had suggested it to be a pirates theme but Sameer rejected it by saying that she wouldn’t like it. While they were talking, Arya eavesdropped on their conversation. Aditi sees Arya’s shadow and said with a chuckle,
“Aru, we can see you.”
“Ma!” exclaimed Arya.
“Okay, if you are here, then you can yourself tell us the kind of theme you want for your party.”
“I want a wizard and witch theme!” Arya replied with lots of excitement.

Surprisingly, Aditi refused. Arya solicited Aditi, but she kept on saying no to her without even giving it a thought.
“Choose another theme or forget your party.”
This made Arya furious. She was staring at her mother in agony only when the chandelier started shaking. No sooner had they looked up than it crashed right onto the floor. Aditi’s right arm had gotten injured. But that wasn’t what bothered Aditi. Because, while all of this was happening, Aditi saw something very dark in Arya’s eyes which made her question a lot of things that made her blood run cold. The anger in her reminded Aditi of Morrigan.
Sameer saw the blood gushing on Aditi’s hand, and said, “Aditi we need to go to the hospital. Arya, go to your room.”
Arya, shaken from the chaos, went to her room and Aditi and Sameer led towards the hospital. Arya felt guilty because she believed that she was the reason for her mother’s injury. Aditi was worried about Arya because she knew that it had happened because of Arya’s anger that had made her thoughts come alive. The next day, Aditi was thinking about Morrigan, a lady she had met 17 years ago in the woods, on the balcony.
“Ma, are you angry with me?” Arya said coming out of nowhere.
Aditi looked at Arya and replied with a gentle look in her eyes,
“No Aru, why would I ever be angry with you? I just need some time alone. You should go and prepare for your exams.”

A rya’s birthday; early morning Aditi went into Arya’s room to wake her up.
“Arya, wake up.” She kisseed her on her forehead, “Wish you a very happy birthday, baby.”
“Mom!” Arya hugged her mom.
“Wake up. We have a lot to plan. A dark magic theme is not easy to plan.”
Arya jumped off her bed.
“We’re really having a witch and wizard theme? Mom, I love you.” Arya started getting ready for school. Aditi had prepared Arya’s favourite breakfast.
“Mom, dosa!” with a huge smile on her face.
“I will pick you up from school today, and then we will go for shopping.”
“Okay, mom.” Arya replied and headed for school.
In the afternoon Aditi picked up Arya from school and they went for shopping. Aditi was happy to see Arya happy after a long time. She wanted to make this birthday special and memorable for her baby girl. When they reached home, Arya was stunned by seeing the decorations her parents had already done. The whole house was decorated in black and white balloons, witch’s hats, brooms, wands, and scary toys. It was decorated exactly the way Arya had wished for her birthday.
