Chapter 1
“I never found anything on an Arnold Lewis from what we know about Clemence. But I looked through the King’s Royal guard, and among them, the name ‘Dantalion’ came up. I looked it up, and…”
T he sun was at its peak, but obscured by the Gray clouds that covered the sky. Trees that stood like giants waved gently in the breeze and went on for miles all around, and the town of Goldberg observed noon on another Winter day.
Children ran around the playground in the school, and parents droned on with their work, be it at the local grocery store, one of the few convenience stores around, or any of the other businesses in the town.
In one neighborhood of Goldberg, an older white sedan pulled into the driveway, and a taller man wearing a blue superhero shirt and jeans stepped out after parking it. His hair was like a brown nest upon his head as he entered the small trailer house that sat behind the driveway.
As he entered, he was greeted by 2 large labradors, both a light brown and white mixture.
“Hey bu-buddy,” he cooed to one of the large canines,
“Where’s Albert? Go get him!” He said, excitement in his voice to emit the same level of excitement from the dogs. They both ran down the hallway to the man’s right, past 2 doors and into a third at the end of the hall, bursting the door open and jumping on the bed where Albert was just about to sleep.
Albert Barrett winced as he felt the dogs bounce and trample him, not knowing that they were disturbing him in any way as they happily trotted all over his back and legs. His crystal blue eyes peeked through his long, dark hair.
Albert twisted himself and sat up, huffing as he looked to the doorway.
“Clay, you dick! I told you to stop riling them up like that!”
Clay walked into the room, rolling and cracking his neck as he leaned on the doorway.
“Not my fault, they just like me too much,” Clay responded as Albert got out of bed, the dogs quickly becoming bored and leaving the room to explore the house, which they had explored countless times before.
“How was work?” Albert asked. His dark brown hair fell over his face and all around his head, hanging down near his shoulders in the back and just past his jawline closer to the front.
“Not bad, same old same old,” Clay answered.
“You finish your paperwork for the military?” He asked, following Albert as the both of them walked back down the hall towards the living room.
“Yeah, I finished it, sent it in, all that. Now I’m just waiting for confirmation so I can ship out,” Albert said, sitting on the couch and stretching.
“Does mom know?” Clay asked, sitting on the recliner just to the right of the couch, facing the television mounted to the wall and grabbing the remote.
“Nah, but I finished it right before dad went to work,” Albert said as Clay turned on the TV, a news report halfway through its course.
“This is the fifth sighting of the magic-user group ‘the Red Hand’ this year in the nation of Tarren, and the twenty-first worldwide since the beginning of the year, a record high. While most of the Magic Users were said to be killed within Tarren, a number still remain in hiding, and as they group together, remain a threat to the Tarren people,” Said the news reporter.
“Oh yeah, scary Houdini’s are gonna come blow our door open and get us all,” Clay said. Albert was laughing along with him.
“Yeah, like there could be that many left in the country, let alone a number of them who’re actually evil or something,” Albert said.
“Thankfully, Chancellor Jackson Ambrose has agreed to strengthen the budget of the magic Suppression Force, in an attempt to subdue any and all signs of Magic Users across Tarren, and a new plan to expand military forces to help combat Magic Users in nearby nations such as Brakata or Virtuin. The MSF has said in an interview they plan on establishing outposts throughout Tarren to better combat the threats that have surfaced,” The news reporter said. A tall, white man in a suit with blonde hair tied back in a ponytail stood at a podium, speaking towards the camera that the TV broadcasted. His eyes were a warm yellow color, like molten gold within his irises.
“We believe that these heinous sightings have been happening around the many geysers in Tarren and Brakata. We are currently working with Brakata’s internal affairs brigade to establish a way to efficiently stop these Magic Users from bringing any more harm to the people of our nations,” He said.
“What year did we take the world back again?” Albert looked at his phone, typing away as Clay looked over.
“Well, the Second Great War ended in ‘45, so I’m guessing sometime around then. Why?” Clay said while Albert continued typing.
“Just wondering how long it’s been. You’d think after what, 75 years? That they’d kill the last of them off so nobody has to worry about it,” Albert said.
“Maybe they already did and this is just some scare tactic by the government to keep us under their thumb?” Clay shrugged.
“Well, for most people, it does the trick. Seems like everyone around here is always on edge whenever those people are mentioned,” Albert said.
“People? That’s awfully generous…” Clay said, rolling his eyes and channel flipping again.

It was a brief while before Albert got a call from his mother, asking him to bring her an extra jacket. The clouds in the sky had made what was to be a cold winter day even colder, though not enough to bring about snow. The most they had gotten was a layer of frost that morning as the dew lightly froze to the plants it rested on.
As Albert arrived at the local Market Store, a grocery store that had been open almost as long as the town had existed, he got out of the same Sedan that Clay had used to get home earlier, grabbing a thick brown jacket that belonged to his mother out of the backseat and walking inside.
In the store, a single shelf on the wall and one in the open area of the floor led Albert to the right, towards the produce section, where his mother was stocking bags of whole spinach in a red apron, black hat, a black shirt and khakis, with a pair of clear gloves over her hands.
His mother was a shorter woman, contrary to both he and his brother, who must have inherited their heights from her father since both her and her husband, the father of the two, stand no taller than 5’7” while both boys were well over 6ft.
“Damn, it’s almost as cold in here as it is outside,” He said as he approached his mother, putting out his arm that held her jacket.
“Yeah, why do you think I needed the extra jacket?” She chuckled as she took it, sliding her arms into the sleeves. She pulled her dyed black hair up through the collar of the jacket, letting it flow down to just above the small of her back.
“Don’t you think that wearing gloves but having your hair down is a bit redundant?” Albert asked.
“Hey, you know how my scalp is. Hair ties hurt, and I’m not about to wear a hair net. Half the town would be laughing at me before I left work,” She said, still stocking the cold spinach.
“If you say so,” He half-rolled his eyes and turned away from her before she looked up and stopped him.
“Hey, did you send in that paperwork?” She asked, shaking her outstretched hand at him.
“Yes, I sent it in, I’m just waiting for a shipping date,” He said, turning back to her slowly, half wincing in preparation for her response.
“I don’t know what in the world makes you want to go out there and fight like that, all that violence, death, and all those Magic Users people,” she began. “I wouldn’t even let Rick go in, simply cause we were about to have Clay,”
“Hey, you know those guys are nearly wiped out. I’m not worried about them, I just want a way to protect myself and pay for an education,” He said.
“There’s plenty of ways to pay off your school than going and killing for a living,” She said, raising her eyebrows and puffing her lips with sass.
“Well, unless the entire school board is gay, I don’t think I can get in the way you did,”
The woman looked at him, her brow furrowed and her mouth agape for just a moment.
“If I wasn’t afraid I’d lose my job I would whip your ass right he
