Description

Melisa had refused to accept Claire because of what she did. She knowingly had an affair with a married man. She had knowingly opened a weakness in Melisa’s family and she tore them apart. How could Melisa forgive her for that? How could she forgive her for doing something which was so clearly wrong? Melisa’s stance gets put to the test, though, when she finds out that her crush from the plane has a girlfriend and that he seems pretty reluctant to change that.

INSPIRING WORDS
“When you have expectations, you are setting yourself up for disappointment.”
- Ryan Reynolds
CHAPTER 1

I don’t like dresses. I was pretty sure that I’d made that clear. I didn’t own dresses. I didn’t wear dresses. There weren’t any photos of me wearing dresses to even look at as a reference. I liked pants. I liked jeans. At a push, I didn’t mind a pair of cut off shorts. Not dresses though. Never dresses.
There was something about being so exposed that made me feel uncomfortable. What if I got attacked? How could I defend myself with a skirt whooshing around my legs? It wasn’t just that, though. People don’t take you seriously if you’re in a dress. They sort of just dismiss you because you’re a girl and you’re dressed up like a girl. I hated that. I hated the way guys would dismiss something I said just because I was a girl. They’d be all like, don’t be so emotional and I would be talking about the earth burning because of global warming or something.
I don’t know how I can put into words how hard it is to try and have a debate about something important and for some guy to ask if you’re on your period. It’s like, no, you jerk-off, I’m not, but even if I were, the world being destroyed is still an okay thing to get annoyed about. Dresses did not help with this. Dresses made everything worse. They turn angry leopards into kittens.
“Oh, wouldn’t you look beautiful in this?” Claire’s British accent hung to every letter of every word with perfect poise as she spoke. I looked at her hands. She was pushing out a light pink, feathery, layered dress in my direction. I looked back up to her and shook my head. She frowned. “You’d look beautiful in it,” she insisted. “Won’t you at least try it on?”
I shook my head again with a grave look in my eyes. “I’m not wearing pink.” Her shoulders slumped a little and the dress started to sweep against the floor, between her feet. “Can’t I just wear a nice pant suit or something?”
“You want to wear a pant suit?” Claire asked me, as though the concept was absolutely alien to her. “Why?”
I shrugged. “I don’t like dresses.”
“This is a wedding rehearsal dinner, though,” Claire insisted. “It’s traditional for the girls to be in dresses.”
“It’s also traditional to only get married once,” I pointed out, before I could stop the sharp words from rolling away from my tongue.
She looked hurt. She looked like my words had dragged against her skin with their jagged edges, until all the hope inside of her had bled out. “I guess if you want to wear a suit then you can,” she said softly.
