SOME WORDS ON FITZ JA MES O’BRIEN
WHAT WAS IT?
Fitz James O’Brien
Fitz James O’Brien was born in County Cork, Ireland in 1828. He attended the University of Dublin, where he showed an enthusiasm for writing verse, and upon graduating moved to London. In 1852, he emigrated to the USA to dedicate his life to writing, and had his early work published in Lantern Magazine. From February of 1853, he began to work with Harper’s Magazine , and went to on write for a number of other publications, including Vanity Fair and T he Atlantic.
Although he penned a vast amount of articles, and even plays, O’Brien is chiefly remembered nowadays for a number of much-anthologized stories he wrote: The Diamond Lens , his most famous short story, can be regarded as a forerunner of the sciencefiction genre; What Was It? is alleged to have served as a model for H.G. Wells’ The Invisible Man ; and The Wondersmith is an early example of the ‘robot rebellion’ plotline later popularised by writers such as Arthur C. Clarke and Phill ip K. Dick.
O’Brien died in 1862, from wounds sustained while fighting in the America n Civil War.
