The Basics Justin’s full name is Justin Drew Bieber. He is a hugely successful singer/songwriter widely considered to be the first YouTube megastar. He was born on the 1 st of March 1994, making his star sign Pisces. Those born under this sign are said to be passionate, energetic and likeable; they are also supposedly daydreamers, always thinking up brilliant ideas and plans. Where Justin is different to the ‘average’ Pisces is that others’ plans most often come to nothing! Justin was born in London, Ontario (in Canada) and grew up in the nearby city of Stratford. Both of these cities happen to be named after their English equivalents, with Stratford situated around the River Avon in both countries. Justin’s mother is called Patricia Mallette (although her friends - and most fans in the know - call her Pattie) and his father is named Jeremy Jack Bieber. His biological parents were never married, and Justin was their only child together - although he now has two much younger step-siblings, Jazmyn (born in 2009) and Jaxon (born in 2010). Despite taking his father’s surname, Justin was in fact raised by his mother and her partner (after splitting up with Jeremy) called Bruce. Justin has quite the mixed ancestry. His mother is of French-Canadian descent, and going back a hundred years or so, his paternal great-grandfather had German roots. Furthermore he has elements of both English and Irish ancestry, and has also said in an interview that he believes there to be some Aboriginal Canadian ancestors in his family’s past... so a real melting pot there! In complete contrast to his current epic wealth, Justin grew up in a relatively poor environment. He lived with his mother in low-income housing, and she worked a variety of poorly-paid jobs that barely saw ends meet. Justin attended the Jeanne Sauvé Catholic elementary school which has an approach to education that is most likely quite different to yours: the majority of lessons such as science, maths and geography were actually conducted in French! Because of this, Justin is fluent in French as well as his native language, English. After elementary school he moved on to St Michael Catholic Secondary School where he was by all accounts an outstanding student. He achieved a 4.0 Grade Point Average (for fans not in North America, this is exceptionally good!) and was popular with both his fellow students and his teachers. Justin has said that at times he was bullied, but was generally confident enough to hold his own against anyone. Justin had been a good singer since his earliest years, a facet that was refined at school. Whilst there, he taught himself how to play a range of instruments - mainly the piano, guitar, trumpet and drums; he also studied musical theory, which gave him the ability to put all of these skills together. It was mainly to be his singing ability that would lead to his initial popularity, but his wider musical ability - specifically his songwriting talents - would propel him to the very top of the industry.
