The Basics Lionel’s full name is Lionel Brockman Richie, Jr. He was born on the 20 th of June 1949. This means that his star sign is Gemini. People born under this sign are said to be imaginative and inspirational to others, with infectious charisma and plenty of accomplishments... yep, that’s a pretty accurate description of Lionel! Lionel was born and raised in Tuskegee, a very small city in Macon Country, Alabama before moving to Joilet, Illinois. Tuskegee is extremely rich in history. Prior to the American civil war, the area was a huge cotton plantation, almost entirely dependent on slave labour. After emancipation, many African-Americans still continued to work on the local plantations. Despite the actions of the KKK who were extremely active just a few miles down the road, the area’s reputation was established as a centre of learning when in 1881 Brooker T. Washington was hired to develop the Tuskegee Normal School for Coloured Teachers, so that freed men and women could train as teachers. Tuskegee has ever since had a reputation for producing excellent educators. Richie’s father, Lionel Brockman Richie, Sr was a strict but loving military man. His mother, Alberta, was an English teacher.
