PROLOGUE
A gaucho (Argentinian cowboy) and his son are in the Andes Mountains traversing a steep trail just outside of their small, isolated village on the Chilean-Argentinian border, when two gunmen approach with AK-47s trained on them. The father freezes, then turns to protect his son, when one of the Michoacan Cartel “soldiers” tells them to get off their horses and kneel in front of them with their hands placed on their heads…...
The other soldier walks back to the jeep and pulls out two duffel bags full of kilos of cocaine, approaching the pack horses the gaucho and his son were pulling behind them. He orders the father to stand up and follow him to the first packhorse, instructing him to secure the duffel bags next to the boxes the horses had tied to them……
Pulling out a map showing a detailed geographical layout of the roads and trails in the region, he tells the gaucho: “You will take this trail, senior, and you will stop here and wait for a man to approach you and take the bags from your horse. He will give you more money than you have ever made in your lifetime, and you will accept this, for “Plata O’ Plumo” (Silver or lead) is your future now…… the other soldier walks over to the boy, scratching him playfully on the head, handing him a candy bar and calming him with soft spoken words; the boy relaxes, looking over at his father in a hopeful gesture….
Dad just got recruited into the Michoacan Drug Cartel.
Chapter One: “The Arrival”
Our plane touches down in the city of La Pampa, In the La Palma Province, located next to the central zone of the Mendoza province of Argentina. A war wagon with two vehicle escorts approaches the private jet we came in on, signaling us over to them. “Don Santiago sends his respects, Mr. Williams, and to you also, Raphael.” “Thank you; is the Don well?” “He is, senior. I am going to take you to him in Viedma. We have a long drive ahead of us, senior, so we need to move…”
Several hours later we pull up in front of the minimum-security prison where the Don is housed at. The guards, all bought off, escort us into the prison, down a long corridor to a private visiting room, asking us to take a seat. Shortly, the Don is brought in, and the guards leave the room. (Don Santiago) “My friends, how are you?” “(shaking his hand) “We are well, and ready to serve you, sir. What is it you want of us?”
“Advice, senior Williams. For the past few years, I have worked with the Sinaloa Cartel. Recently, The Michoacan Cartel showed up in my province and have started making moves to take over my business. What I need to know is if I am to go to war with them, what am I up against.” “Yes, that would be something to think through, sir. My suggestion is to notify the Sinaloa Cartel of the problem before the “Michoacanos” get too firmly planted in your backyard, and to consider taking out their leaders.”
“We’ve sent word to Sinaloa, Mr. Williams, and they want me to send a representative to discuss the matter. Riaz is a good lieutenant, Mr. Williams, but not a man capable of negotiating with men of such power. They would notice this and would use it against me for their own desires. Would you consider representing me in Culiacan?” “I need a night to consider this, sir. I would have to make a few calls and get back to you in the morning, if that is okay.” “You see what I mean? You think before you commit; that’s experience that takes years to acquire. Of course, you need to research this, and with a powerful friend in the CIA (Episode 7, “Operation Miami Cartel) He can test the waters for you before you go there.”
“Don’t forget, Don Santiago, it was my friend in the CIA that got you transferred to this minimum-security facility. He is an ally for you now, and a powerful one.” “Yes, Mr. Williams, I agree completely. Listen, Riaz has already arranged a suite for you both at one of our better Hotels on the waterfront. Please get some rest and enjoy yourselves. Would you like a woman for your pleasure tonight?” “No. I don’t need a set of “ears” overhearing anything, but thank you Don Santiago, for your generous offer. I’ll leave you now and get back with you in the morning. It's good to see you here, sir. Goodnight.”
The following morning….
“Good morning, Jefe’, it’s nice to see you up and about.” (Smiling) “Yeah, it sure beats maximum security. My cell looks like an apartment with all the amenities… TV... cooking range, refrigerator stocked full of beer and wine…. And a cute little babe brought in whenever I want one…. For the right price. Yeah, you did me a big favor, guys. So, have you decided on my request?” “I have, Jefe’, I’ll be flying out to Mexico City later today, transferring over to Culiacan by nightfall. Have you made arrangements for your people to pick me up?”
“I will, now that you have decided to be my security adviser.” (Laughing) “Okay, well then, I’d better get rolling; got a flight to catch. I’ll see you soon, Jefe’, so don’t wear yourself out with all your new “play toys”, Okay? (laughing).”
Culiacan, Sinaloa Mexico Headquarters of the Sinaloa Drug Cartel….
We were met upon arrival and whisked away from the airport heading in a northerly direction when they blindfolded us. “This is just a precaution, senior. It is better you do not know where we are taking you.”
The ride was long, about two hours, with the last hour on a windy dirt road that felt like the environment was changing…… it was. We arrived at an older, smaller ranch in the lower hills of the Sierra Madre’ Mountain range. The ranch was old, unkempt, and isolated from any other buildings or ranches. We pulled up and parked, and as they were shutting the motor off one of the sicarios (hitmen) pulled off our blindfolds, thanking us for our understanding, and respect.
We entered the humble abode, noticing that it was clean and immaculate, with nice couches and tables adorning the main room. Paintings of famous Mexican outlaws decorated the walls, and a small, four-person bar was nestled comfortably in the corner by the hallway that led to the two bedrooms and the bathroom in back. One of the guards got on a walkie-talkie and told someone on the other end that the guests were here…. Closing the conversation with “Jefe’….” We were given a couple of beers and exquisite snacks were placed before us on the coffee table. A few minutes later I heard a couple of vehicles pull in, followed by a voice shouting commands, then, a man walked in with two bodyguards behind him. Yeah, this was a drug lord.
“Seniors…. Thank you for taking the trip north. How is my friend, Don Santiago?” “He is well, Don Chavez; he sends his respects to you, Jefe’.” “You know my name?” “Si, senior. I have seen your face on television many times. Apologies if this has offended you in any way, Don Chavez.” “No, no, Mr. Williams. I too, have heard your name many times over the years. Your former boss in Durango was a good friend on mine and he used to speak very highly of both of you, which is why we are meeting tonight. I could have sent someone else, but I wanted to meet you and to thank you personally for being so good to my friend. It was a sad day when I learned he was killed by a rival cartel boss.” (Operation Durango Cartel, Episode 2)
“Yes sir, we became close friends. He told me about you also and swore one day we would meet, and here we are.” “Salud! Salud! To my new friends...” “I’m honored, sir. I have come to you with a problem, and I speak on behalf of Don Santiago. An element has recently come into the Mendoza province in Argentina. They are confirmed Michoacanos, trying to move in on your operations. The Don has requested that you give him guidance before he acts on his new enemies. I counseled him on this matter, and he agreed.”
“Yes, I have heard of your skills and abilities in negotiating from my former friend in Durango. It is one of the things he spoke highly about you. So, let me ask you, Mr. Williams, what do you think is best?” “Well sir, as I told my boss, it is best to wipe them out now before they get a foothold on the business you two bosses
