Insights from Chapter 1
#1
The French Foreign Legion is a tough place to live. The 2ème REP, which is the elite world of the French Foreign Legion, is known for its tough training. Anyone failing to reach the highest level has no place in a commando company.
#2
The hardest part of the course was the physical aspect. It was not a game and mistakes could lead to serious injury. The cold was a major factor, as it covered everything in ice.
Insights from Chapter 2
#1
I had always been independent, but when I was 17, I went to London without telling anyone and found myself a job as a junior artist in an advertising agency. I was happy for the first time in my life, but I knew that my parents did not agree with my ambitions to become an artist.
#2
I had been thinking about becoming a police officer since I was 15, and in 1977, when I was 24, I joined Aberdeen City Police. I loved it. Every day was different. I was taught to take responsibility for my actions, which was a shock at first, but with good guidance, I learned to cope.
#3
I was a police officer in Aberdeen, Scotland. The drug and alcohol abuse had never been a major problem in the city, but overnight they became a major problem. I was involved in everything from simple house break-ins to sexual assaults.
#4
I had been moonlighting with some air taxi companies, which was against police regulations. I knew that I was pushing my luck, but I was unable to change my shift system. My wife thought that my absences were due to me having an affair, and we began to divorce.
#5
I had always been fit, played football, squash, and golf, and regularly went running. I had never been teetotal, but I rarely drank and never went into a bar on my own. I had always been bored at work, and eventually I decided to leave.
#6
I was managing and marketing a new Scottish quality timeshare holiday complex, but my personal life was a mess. I had stopped drinking and was getting back my old level of fitness, but I needed more than this. I had lost all belief in myself.
#7
I had saved a bit of money, and I was ready to go. I had never been to France before, but I fell in love with it immediately. I decided to spend some time doing the tourist bit, and found a cheap, clean hotel right in the heart of the city.
Insights from Chapter 3
#1
I was told to go to Paris and visit the recruiting office, which was in an old fort on the eastern outskirts of the city. I found my way there and was soon standing outside the massive doors of an ancient fort dating back to Napoleonic times.
#2
I was taken to a barracks where I was given a bunk bed and a locker to store my kitbag in. I was also given a basic toilet kit.
