Sample Book Insights:
#1 Pupetta Lady Camorra Maresca was a cunning liar and a cold-blooded killer, but if you could look beyond that, she was genuinely delightful. She took down the man who ordered the fatal hit on her husband.
#2 Pupetta was a fascinating woman who had many connections to the underground world. She was always listening to radio ads for private home security services, as she was paranoid about being caught up in something unsavory.
#3 Castellammare di Stabia is a town that was founded on crime, and it is still known for its moral decay. The first time I stayed there, I rented an Airbnb that gave me clear views of the city, sea, and menacing volcano.
#4 The Italian Mafia is still very powerful today, and it stems from a combination of fear and complacency. It is so often said that the mafia is part of Italy’s DNA, and while anti-mafia forces have done a great deal to fight the three main groups, the Cosa Nostra, the ’Ndrangheta, and the Camorra, historically speaking, the only real Mafia is the Sicilian Cosa Nostra.

#1

Pupetta Lady Camorra Maresca was a cunning liar and a cold-blooded killer, but if you could look beyond that, she was genuinely delightful. She took down the man who ordered the fatal hit on her husband.

#2

Pupetta was a fascinating woman who had many connections to the underground world. She was always listening to radio ads for private home security services, as she was paranoid about being caught up in something unsavory.

#3

Castellammare di Stabia is a town that was founded on crime, and it is still known for its moral decay. The first time I stayed there, I rented an Airbnb that gave me clear views of the city, sea, and menacing volcano.

#4

The Italian Mafia is still very powerful today, and it stems from a combination of fear and complacency.

#5

Pupetta’s father was a notable criminal gang leader whose territory included Castellammare di Stabia and the neighboring hamlets that dot the winding roads between the tourist haven of Sorrento, and the gritty backstreets of Naples.

#6

The Italian environmental group Legambiente has warned of an environmental apocalypse in the terra dei fuochi, which, coupled with the endemic corruption often driven by organized crime that has crippled the health care system, makes the damage done here especially daunting.

#7

After World War II, southern Italy was ravaged by the bombs, and farmers had to pay protection money to the local crime groups if they wanted to continue selling their crops.

#8

In 1954, Pasqualone was suddenly released from prison after new evidence emerged in the attempted murder charge. He wanted his old turf back, and soon he was back in business, marrying his girlfriend Pupetta. But they would never be able to leave their life of crime.

#9

The murder of Pasqualone was never solved, and Pupetta, his wife, vowed to avenge his death. She told police that Big Tony ordered the hit, but prosecutors chose not to act on Big Tony’s role.

#10

Pupetta, after shooting Big Tony, claimed that he had tried to open the car door and she had only shot him in self-defense. But the autopsy photos showed that she had used Pasqualone’s Smith Wesson with precision, and then used the revolver carried by her little brother to make sure he was properly dead.

#11

The Pupetta and Big Tony case showed how the Italian justice system could be manipulated to serve the omertà, or code of silence, which extends across all of Italy’s criminal enterprises. The trial gave Pupetta icon status among the Neapolitan criminal elite.
