He rushed into the house, and saw a group of people standing around the body of a woman who had been raped.

As the wail of the ambulance's siren began to fade, McCarrick concentrated on the task at hand. He ordered Powell to secure the house to preserve the evidence. He radioed the station for two more cars to control the crowd, and then took it upon himself to shoo the onlookers off the DeCaro lawn.

Rick DeCaro, who was also a gangly, thin boy, became friends with Elizabeth in elementary school. They would ride to school together, and Rick would spend time at the Van Iseghem house. Georgianna began to notice how much Rick enjoyed the company of girls.

The Van Iseghems had a new family wedding and a new delicatessen, but the best-laid plans. . The week that Georgianna and Jim signed a $100,000 loan for the new shop, they learned that Georgianna was pregnant with their seventh child.

In July 1979, Elizabeth was pregnant with Rick DeCaro’s child. The Van Iseghems were shocked, and Margie was enraged. She thought that Elizabeth, who seemed so sheltered, would not become sexually active at sixteen.

The news of the baby changed everything for Rick. He immediately asked Elizabeth to marry him, and she accepted. But Georgianna and Jim decided that Elizabeth was too young for the marriage, so they offered a counter-proposal. Elizabeth would stay home and study with a tutor until the baby was born. The police chief, Dave King, was sent to investigate the murder of a young woman in her own home. The scene was terrifying, with neighbors and relatives contaminating the crime scene. King felt fear for the first time in his career.

McCarrick explained to King that the St. Louis Metropolitan Major Case Squad was a resource available to police departments that could provide a crushing response of manpower and expertise in a very short time. It sounded like a great idea to King.

Tom O’Connor was one of the Major Case Squad commanders. He was called out to the scene of the crime, where he began making his initial contacts. He was an expert at interrogation, and he intentionally personalized every single case.

O’Connor arrived at the house around 10 p. m. The first thing he noticed was a purse on the table in the living room, its contents spilled out and scattered across the polished wood. Among the portable clues to a woman’s life was a set of wedding and engagement rings. This suggested that the victim had been killed for money.

O’Connor was sure that the purpose of this crime was only one thing: the kill. The killer had been comfortable in the house after accomplishing his purpose with chilling proficiency. The small amount of blood meant she had died quickly.

The DeCaros were a family that attracted attention and envy. They had three children, and they were thriving. They had just sold their house, and they were moving into the Van Iseghems’ house. Rick became extremely close to each member of the family.

Christmas was terrible, and New Year’s Eve was worse. Elizabeth was beginning classes to get her G. E. D. while Rick was busily confiscating her checkbook and credit cards and avoiding her physically. They had begun staying out late, going to hockey games or drinking with friends from the station.

On January 24, Georgianna was planning to have a party to celebrate her fifty-sixth birthday and Rick’s thirtieth birthday. But Rick’s mother, Grace DeCaro, urged her to cancel the party. The family was willing to host the party to thank Rick for the things he had done for them, but they were not willing to forgive what had happened.

The next day, Elizabeth went to the hospital to get X-rays of her injuries, which were limited to a badly bruised left leg and hip. She spent an uncomfortable night while a concerned Rick never left her side.

The Van Iseghems began to notice the strange behavior of their son-in-law, Rick. They would find him crying in the garage, saying he would always love Elizabeth. They were suspicious, but did not know what to do.
