Description

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book.
Sample Book Insights:
#1 My mother told me a story about how the Navajos were almost completely wiped out by alcohol and disease brought to them by white colonists. I never questioned the truth of her narrative, as it was in line with the peaceful images in my books.
#2 I grew up hearing the stories about the Indians and their fate from my mother, and I came to believe that Indians were dangerous and inferior to white people.

#1

Insights from Chapter 2

#1

My parents had been married for fifteen years when I was born in 1960. My father, a workaholic, had been voted the most popular man in our town. My parents made their home in Winchester, a white Boston suburb set in a leafy green area north of the city.

#2

My family’s culture was based on frugality, modesty, and restraint. These three values were reinforced at our family vacation home in northern Maine, where we spent holidays together.

#3

I grew up in northern Maine, and I was extremely accomplished and busy. I believed that being successful was simply a matter of hard work and intention. I learned to stuff down my negative feelings and to buck up with expected chipperness.

#4

I grew up in a house full of activities and activities alone. I was the youngest of five children, and I struggled with feeling left out and left behind. I had learned young that complaining was for losers.
