Insights from Chapter 1
#1
I was born in Tuckahoe, near Hillsborough, Maryland. My mother, Harriet Bailey, was a slave. My father was a white man. I was separated from my mother when I was an infant, and was placed under the care of an old woman.
#2
My mother died when I was seven years old. I was not allowed to be present during her illness or burial. She was gone long before I knew anything about it. I was never allowed to see my father, who was a slaveholder.
#3
