Sample Book Insights:
#1 I grew up in Washington, D. C. , and would pass by houses to wonder about the people who lived inside. I imagined that when I grew up, I would live all over the world. But I realized that these people had nothing to do with the world of mystery, dark deeds, and wilderness that I was sure was out there somewhere.
#2 The author’s fantasy of leading an adventure life began to fade as he grew up. He heard about a young woman named Barbara Newhall Follett, who had published an acclaimed novel at the age of twelve. She had been writing short stories since the age of five.
#3 I was looking for Barbara, the last seen person, and I was sure I would not find her. I was just a year older than Barbara when she vanished, and I had a sense that the decisions I was making would determine the rest of my life.

Insights from Chapter 2

#1

Barbara’s parents were very observant, and they kept a baby book that recorded all the minutiae of her achievements in the first four years of life. Her mother, Helen, was a writer and literary critic.

#2

Helen and Wilson’s baby was a precocious child. She knew all her letters by 18 months, and could count to ten. She became fixated on a paper leaflet entitled A Grammar for Thinkers, and would bring it to her mother to point out the punctuation.

#3

Barbara’s parents filled her world with animals and wilderness exploration. She loathed the idea of killing anything, and she loved the world of creatures that lived in the pristine lake near their house.

#4

Barbara’s father was her adventure companion. He was the one who fascinated and delighted her. She wrote stories about a planet called Farksolia, ruled by two children. The inhabitants lived in cities and left the wilderness untouched.

#5

Barbara’s world was full of people, but few of them were children. She was never bored, as her parents made sure she was never bored. Her parents saw themselves as the master craftsmen of the most enchanted childhood.
