#1

The men were so sunstruck that they didn’t know their own names, couldn’t remember where they came from, or how long they had been lost. They were walking now just to find water, not salvation.

#2

The Devil’s Highway is a name that has set out to illuminate one notion: bad medicine. The first white man to die in the desert heat here did so on January 18, 1541.

#3

The history of Mexico is the history of white immigrants conquering and settling the country.

#4

The town of Sonoita, Mexico, was founded in 1541 by Spanish explorers who were looking for gold. It was a stopping point for them, and they did not want to spend their holidays there, but they were deep into hostile territory.

#5

The Yumas, a tribe in Arizona, were known for their encounters with the mysterious spirit-women, who would fly above their heads. The Jesuits who came to convert them were also met with hostility. The Yumas massacred the Glanton gang in the mid 1840s, and in 1848, the California gold rush began.

#6

The Devil’s Highway was a path between the O’Odham village of Sells and the Coyote pickup point at mile marker 27. It was known for its many dead bodies, and it was beautiful. It was also haunted by demons.

#7

As the men walked out of the light, Border Patrol agent Mike F. was driving his Explorer towards them. He took in the scene as he rolled towards them. Only one of the men stepped forward.

#8

The Border Patrol is a highly competitive game that can be friendly when it’s not frightening or deadly. Agents often know their clients, having apprehended them several times before. Daytime arrests have a different tone than lone midnight busts out in the desert.

#9

The Border Patrol is the law enforcement agency tasked with apprehending lawbreakers on the Mexican border. They are also tasked with saving the lost and dying, which they did with the group of 17 men they found behind the truck.

#10

The final solution to the border crossings was Operation Gatekeeper, which introduced more secure urban borders and trampled wilderness. But smaller, rougher places were becoming hot spots for humans to move through.

#11

The town of Wellton is farms and dirt, dirt and farms. New agents, fresh from the East or West coasts, ask where they can find an espresso or a latte. Kenny Smith tells them that they can go down to Circle K and get a sixteen-ounce coffee with some flavored creamer in it.

#12

The Border Patrol has a very unique job. They are the only ones who can go out and actually arrest people. They are guards, monitors, and writers all in one.
