Insights from Chapter 1
#1
The first time you find a woman’s vibrator is never forgotten. I learned this lesson when I was thirteen and rummaging around my friend Danny’s tree house-like cottage with my brother Chad. We found a white, missile-shaped device that began to buzz and vibrate. We knew nothing about it, but we knew we didn’t want to investigate any further.
#2
I was a misfit teen in Malibu, and I knew I had to fit in with the popular kids to avoid being bullied. I got a small wooden pot pipe, and pretended to be cool by never using it.
#3
The president of the United States and many other people have crystals that provide them with comfort and power. I know someone who is a genius, but he has no staff or office, just a cubbyhole office up a flight of stairs.
#4
The San Fernando Valley produced its own landlocked answer to Malibu’s would-be stars. At the beach, the hot band was the Surf Punks. In the Valley, the Runaways were trailblazing the path for all-girl bands to come.
#5
I ran into Moosie Drier of Oh, God! and The Bob Newhart Show fame, and Kim Richards, the go-to cute little blond girl from all the Disney movies.
#6
The Valley was also home to many actors who were also great athletes. The king of television, auteur Garry Marshall, hosted a notoriously elite, every-weekend basketball tournament at his Tarzana home. I was thrilled to be included once or twice, with mixed results.
#7
The Valley is rimmed on its southern side by the storied Mulholland Drive. It was the address of the biggest icons of my youth: Jack Nicholson, Marlon Brando, and Warren Beatty. They were everything I aspired to be: authentic artists, titans of their time, while being timeless and known for a wild streak that made them cool and a little dangerous.
#8
Oscars are the most recognizable and coveted symbols in the world. I had always been fascinated with what movie stars thought about one another. Were they supportive of each other. Jealous. Did they learn from each other.
#9
I was dating an actress more famous than I was, just like you, Warren Beatty. I was 18 years old, and I was having dessert while Warren talked about my future. He said I reminded him of Natalie Wood, who had always been getting asked to come up to Frank Sinatra’s house and lay by the pool.
