Early life Gubler went to The Meadows School, and is a high school graduate of the Las Vegas Academy of International Studies, Performing and Visual Arts, where he majored in acting, because the school did not offer his first love, film [2] making. He is a graduate of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts where he majored in film directing. He also attended UC Santa Cruz. Gubler's parents were both born in Las Vegas and his mother, Marilyn Gubler, was the first woman to serve as Republican state Chairman. His grandfather Maxwell Kelch was the first president of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce and founded Las Vegas' first radio station (KENO). Gubler's sister Laura Dahl is a fashion designer based in New York City. He has a brother named Gray Gubler who was born in 1994, who appeared in the music video for the songReaganby Whirlwind Heat (which Gubler directed).

Career While at NYU film school, Gubler was found by a model scout and then worked as a model with DNA Model [3] Management for Tommy Hilfiger, Marc Jacobs and American Eagle among others. He was also ranked No. 46 on models.com list of top 50 male models. He has modeled brands such as Burberry, Marc Jacobs, and various others. After he began modeling, Gubler had an internship for Wes Anderson, who encouraged him to audition for a part in his movieThe Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. Gubler did, and landed the role of Nico (a.k.a. Intern #1). This led to [3] his role as Dr. Spencer Reid inCriminal Mindsepisode of his show,. An Criminal Minds, which ended in his character, Spencer Reid, staring down the barrel of a gun, received the highest ratings in the show's history (by E214 episode) at over 26 million viewers. Filmmaking While makingThe Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Gubler made the documentary entitledMatthew Gray Gubler's Life Aquatic Intern Journal, a behind-the-scenes view of the making of the film, which was later included in some [4] DVD releases. Gubler has directed and starred in a series of self-deprecating mockumentaries namedMatthew [5] Gray Gubler: the Unauthorized Documentaryin which he parodies Hollywood behavior, which are filmed while on the set ofCriminal Minds. A follow-up "Matthew Gray Gubler: The Authorized Documentary" was also made, [2][5][6] although only one episode is currently available. He directed, edited, and co-produced the music video for [6] "Don't Shoot Me Santa" by the rock band The Killers. He also appeared as the main character in How To Be A Serial Killer. He has also directed the episode "Mosley Lane" which was season 5 of Criminal Minds (5x16), which originally aired March 3, 2010, along with the episode "Lauren" (6x18), which aired a year later on March 16, 2011. The episode "Lauren" included the exit of Criminal Minds series regular Paget Brewster, who maintains a friendship with Gubler outside of work on the show. Brewster specifically asked Gubler to direct her last episode for the show, although it was announced later that she would return for season seven.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissouis an American comedy-drama film directed, written, and co-produced by Wes Anderson. It is Anderson's fourth feature length film, released in the U.S. on December 25, 2004. It was written by Anderson and Noah Baumbach and was filmed in and around Naples, Ponza, and the Italian Riviera. The film stars Bill Murray as Steve Zissou, an eccentric oceanographer who sets out to exact revenge on the "Jaguar shark" that ate his partner Esteban. Zissou is both a parody of and homage to Jacques-Yves Cousteau, to whom the film is dedicated. Cate Blanchett, Willem Dafoe, Michael Gambon, Jeff Goldblum, Anjelica Huston, Owen Wilson and Seu Jorge also are featured in the film. It was released May 10, 2005 on DVD as part of The Criterion Collection.
