About the Author

Nigel Goodall wrote Winona Ryder: The Biography , the first British biography of the American Actress, in 1998. It was nominated for the Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction, became a Daily Telegraph bestseller , and the source for several major TV documentaries transmitted in the UK, USA and Canada. The book also won Nigel recognition as Winona’s key biographer. Now long out of print, this digital edition has been completely revised by restoring passages cut out of the original manuscript together with the addition of new material.
Nigel is also the author of more than 20 books including several bestselling biographies of Johnny Depp, all of which have been translated into various languages throughout the world. Both What’s Eating Johnny Depp and The Secret World of Johnny Depp still remain on his publisher’s bestseller list.
Among the other biographies Nigel has written are Christian Slater, Demi Moore, Ray Winstone, David Tennant and Kylie Minogue. His Winona research archives serve as a primary resource for television, magazines and libraries.
Nigel, who has also written articles for magazines such as Record Collector and TV Times, lives in Sussex, England, from where he travels occasionally to New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles for research and author interviews.

In August 1996, I asked Winona Ryder’s publicist, Mara Buxbaum, whether Winona would be interested in cooperating with a biography to be published in the landmark year of her twentieth film, Alien Resurrection . Although the production process for one reason or another delayed publication, this biography is intended to reflect that benchmark of achievement as Winona celebrates her first decade in the entertainment industry.
Within a few days, Mara wrote me a polite refusal saying that Winona had a great deal more to do professionally, and that she was much too young to start thinking about a biography. Certainly both points are true. However, not since Natalie Wood has an American actress successfully maintained a screen career from adolescence to adulthood in the full glare of the Hollywood spotlight.
Although now barely into her mid-twenties, Winona Ryder has already cemented her reputation as one of the most admired and brightest young stars in Hollywood today. Her first starring role was only her second film ever and, since then, in little more than twelve years, she has established herself as the most significant and exciting actress of her generation.
Those who know me are aware that I did not need much persuasion to decide to go ahead with this book. For me, it has been a fascinating and worthwhile exercise both personally and professionally to study this very intriguing actress, a process that began from Winona’s first moments on screen when I realised, as did the rest of the cinema-going public, that Winona Ryder was, and remains, someone to watch.
